Welcome to the JMP Development Update for April 9, 2021!
We are nearing JMP 16.1 Code Approval Mode on 4/27/21. Please review open bug lists and identify and comment on items that need to be resolved for our first maintenance release. Also, 4/27/21 is the last day to make string edits for 16.1. Code Freeze for JMP 16.1 is coming up in a little over a month (5/14/21).
Hopefully you have noticed my items pointing to stories on Inside JMP, our JMP internal intranet site located in the JMP Community (e.g., see the Inside JMP item in General Announcements below asking you to share for the Get to Know feature). Sales highlights, education updates, product management updates, and stories featuring your JMP colleagues are all posted there along with all kinds of helpful bookmarks and other resources. You should subscribe (in the red triangle menu on this page) to receive email notifications of new posts. Thanks to Diana’s team for maintaining this wonderful site!
I am continuing to work with teams to migrate items to Jira via CSV import. Please let me know when you have triaged your items remaining open in Defects and are ready to migrate some or all of them to start getting familiar with Jira. I do not currently plan to migrate items from the Future track or L priority items.
However, I am willing to make an exception for select Future track items that are on your actively triaged future to-do list but not yet scheduled for a specific release. If you have such items, they can be imported without a release track assigned, and assigned to a specific release when they become a priority at a later date.
Justin Chilton kindly created a script that calls the Defects and Jira APIs to do a series of cleanup steps to address various items that the Jira CSV import tool can’t accomplish-adding links, watchers, reformatting text and other tasks.
Once items have been imported via CSV and cleaned up using Justin’s tool, they are closed with a comment redirecting to Jira. We worked out a variety of features and bugs this week as Justin and I collaborated to get all of the HTML5 team’s items migrated. Thanks to John Powell for working with us to get this task completed!
Finally, big congrats to two JMP development collaborations that produced issued patents recently!
Ryan Parker, Clay Barker and Chris Gotwalt received word that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued a patent for Analytic System for Interactive Graphical Model Selection on 2021-03-30 as U.S. Patent No. 10,963,788. (Issued Patents.)
Jeremy Ash, Chris Gotwalt, and Laura Lancaster were recently issued a patent for work titled Analytic System with Extrapolation Control in Interactive Graphical Prediction Evaluation on 2021-03-30 as U.S. Patent No. 10,963,804. (Issued Patents.)

- Bryan F: Working on converting from mouse and touch events to the newer pointer events. Doing so will allow us to capture the mouse so that you can pan and zoom a graph even if the cursor or your finger (for a touch device) crosses over another graph. For standalone HTML5, the cursor or your finger can even go outside the browser window. Here is an example. Fixed an issue where a treemap cell may not look selected when exported to HTML5 if there is not a column in the y role and all the rows are hidden.
- Mayowa: Worked on updating interactive html support message strings (JMPHTML-539), working on refactoring code to determine full or partial support for interactive html (JMPHTML-547)

- Tommy O: Working on bug fixes for 16.1 / 17.0. Finished up experimenting with a node.js OIDC provider package to see if it could simplify our authentication from JMP to JMP Live.
Statistics
- John Sall: Continuing to speed up Genomics-relevant code, Response Screening smoothed over some bottlenecks to improve a benchmark problem from 13.35 minutes to 6.50 minutes, more than double the speed. This involved 319 Y's by 667,505 X's on 390 rows; about 213 million regressions, or about 545,000 regressions per second on a 16-core Mac Pro. Also Logistic Regression was provided with some mechanisms to support huge numbers of response variables (S1588132). Some of the speedup involved switching from shared_ptr's to raw pointers (reported in a recent email, S1588205). Also thank you to Dave Barbour for hugely speeding up TableBox creation (S1588110) and Dan Schikore for hugely speeding up GFont constructors on the Mac (S1588111).
- Laura C-S: Finished preparing materials for next week’s presentation at DATAWorks. Investigated a convergence issue in SEM, improved display of warnings and fixed a defect in the predicted values plot. Researched a few topics including, instrumental variables’ method for starting values in SEM, ideal method for confidence interval of reliability coefficients, and fitting PROC SYSLIN models in SEM.
- Peng: Constructed examples and explained how to fit Eyring model using JMP to our China team. Submitted a couple of abstracts for talks. And address some newly surfaced defects.
- Annie: Worked on fixing defects in Control Chart Builder, Cusum Control Charts, and the EWMA Control Chart, both in 17 and integrating some into 16.1.
Stat Testing
- Jacob: Testing mixture factors used as covariates in DOE. Testing fixes related to factor names in DOE (S1588289 and S1588315). Testing the performance of SEM, Latent Class Analysis, and Multivariate Robust Outliers.
- Jeremy: Bug verifications and unit test clean up. Work on our extrapolation control paper.
Product Management
- Dieter: Dealt with the certificates for JMP Public, improved my JSL skills by programmatically adding users to a JMP Live site and upgraded jmplivesales16 to JMP Live 16.1
