Call for papers - when should it open and close?<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />At our post conference meeting the suggestion was made to modify the call for papers to allow more time for submissions.
For the conference this year the call for papers was July 1 - Sept 19.
There was some discussion around extending it to October or opening it earlier, or both. There are some issues with extending it into October as we need time to make the selections and prepare the printed materials, so I think that means open it earlier, meaning sometime in June.
Are we recalling the conversation correctly? Can anyone make a suggestion and argument for a specific time to open the call?
Thanks for your thoughts here. We'll need to move quickly to open the call in June.
Thanks!
-Jeff
Re: Call for papers - when should it open and close?Hi All,
Based on feedback, the call for papers will go from June 22 - Sept 18.
Thank you,

Re: Call for papers - when should it open and close?Hi Jeff,
as I was one of the people bringing up this point let me make a suggestion:
Send out the first call for papers begin June, than I guess it should reach most people before the summer holidays in universities and schools. The end date actually was quite okay, maybe we could make the rule it is the Friday of the third week in September, if that fits with the timings for selection etc. And maybe we do then reminders at the start of each month in between or something like that.
Just to add: last year was special for me in the sense that ENBIS was extremely late and that was why I could not use that event to get extra submissions. This year that will be a lot easier as ENBIS is earlier than usual!
Cheers,
Winfried
Re: Call for papers - when should it open and close?First, thanks Jeff for a great time in Brussels! I learned a lot and really enjoyed it.
As I remember the conversation, first some people argued for extending it, but after a JMP staff member reminded us of the time needed to produce all the printed material etc. we focused more on open it earlier. But then, again, I think some argued that prolonging the call just a little, e.g. to Oct 1, would make a difference.
Although employees in many European countries have generous vacation deals, the time of the summer season that people typically go fishing varies among the countries (and perhaps among sectors), which also may explain the different views within the steering committee on this matter.
If most people work like I tend to do, they would postpone the actual writing and submission to after the summer (in practice, to the last days of the call). But nevertheless the call for papers should open and reach out to people before they leave to get them thinking about what to submit, to give them a mental head-start. But then the close of the call should still not come too soon after summer to give slow starters, time optimists, really busy people and those with late-August vacation habits a chance to submit their paper.
A reasonable call-for-papers period would then extend from Monday June 15 to Sunday 4 October.
