Black scientists, engineers and innovators who changed the world

Larry_LaRusso

Black mathematicians, scientists and engineers have launched humans into space, pioneered innovative disease treatments and developed life-altering technologies that have saved countless lives or changed the world as we know it. As we continue our celebration of Black History Month, we thought you might be interested in checking out these two articles.

Designed to help educate and inspire students of all ages, Science Buddies came up with this list of STEM superstars: 28 Black Scientists to learn more about. A few weeks ago, the Orlando Science Center put together this list: Black Innovators in STEM Who Changed the World. Both are excellent examples of the important achievements and contributions made in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but they are, of course, just a tiny sampling.

So, what additional names would you add to these lists? Feel free to share them in the comments below.

Did you know that Science Buddies, the organization that created 28 Black Scientists to learn more about uses JMP? Cool, right?!?

Larry_LaRusso

No idea that Science Buddies used JMP. How cool. Thanks @Diana_Levey

Here's one scientist I enjoyed learning about this month: Dr James West, inventor of technology used in 90 percent of modern microphones -- like the ones in your smartphone, laptop, baby monitor, hearing aid. Here's a great 12-minute science podcast from NPR about him and an article about him in Wikipedia.
