SPSS is recognized as one of a dozen or so top competitors of JMP. To help Sales better position JMP as the vendor of choice – specifically when stacked up against SPSS – we just released the white paper: Moving from SPSS to JMP: A Transition Guide (2021).
This paper, written by Dr. Josh Lambert of the University of Cincinnati, is an update of a 2011 paper of the same name, written by Dr. Jason Brinkley. Though some of the same topics are covered, this version goes into greater detail, covers several new areas and discusses features and functionality from the latest versions of SPSS and JMP, SPSS Version 27 and soon-to-be-released JMP 16.
The paper will also be beneficial for existing users of SPSS considering moving to JMP or currently using both packages. Because each analytical software package handles, processes, and outputs analysis differently, transitioning from one software program to another can be intimidating. Once users become comfortable with a program it can be difficult to make transitions, either to another program or to a more recent version of the same program. This paper will help new JMP users who learned SPSS either at another company or as a student make the transition, particularly from SPSS Version 27 to JMP 16 and JMP Pro 16.
The paper also illustrates the differences between SPSS and JMP, showing you the vast benefits JMP provides and how easy the transition from SPSS to JMP can be.
Topics covered in this paper include:
- Importing and Cleaning Data
- Visualization
- Descriptives
- Descriptive Statistics
- Custom Tables
- Correlation
- Inference
- Two-Sample t-Test
- Crosstabs/Contingency Tables and Chi-Square Test

In addition to using the white paper to assist with sales efforts, we’re asking JMP sales staff, and everyone at JMP, to help us get the word out that this paper is now available.
If you’d like to generate a Salesforce record, please share the gated asset.
You can also share the direct link for an immediate download of the white paper (PDF). (Note: This will not log a record in Salesforce.)
Because of its value to existing JMP users, we also plan to post this resource as a JMPer Cable blog on the JMP Community in the coming days.
If you have any question, please give me a shout.
Thanks
