Maddeningly vague customer inquiry about hard-coding formulas in JMP scripts

Hello all,

 

A customer asked me about something he learned at the Scripting Forum led by Wayne Levin, held as post-conference training after Discovery 2015 in San Diego. He tells me somebody -- he doesn't remember who -- suggested that certain kinds of formulas -- he doesn't remember which -- should have math explicitly hardcoded, rather than relying on JMP functions. Does this sound familiar to anybody who was there?

Yeah, I was there for that. There were some comments made about doing calculations on matrices in memory rather than relying on column formulas. The general thought was that calculating values in memory and writing them to the table as values (rather than formulas) would be faster and make loading tables easier. This was highlighted as an issue when there are many columns with formulae in big tables.
