Sentiment Analysis
US/Europe Session
- Can you define an added phrase as a negation or intensifier?
- I tried an example and it appears to work part way but not altogether. You can add a phase as a term, use manage negation terms to add the phrase. SA appears to recognize the phrase as a negation term (shows up when you hover on it) but doesn’t perform the negation on the sentiment term.
- What are the supported languages?
- English only at this time.
- When is the JMP 16 Training Starter available?
- I plan to release the training starter at the end of the training sessions. The reason for the delay is currently several items are being added every day. As an interim solution, please use the links on this page. This will point to SharePoint folders that always have the latest files (QuickStart guides, data tables, journals, etc.).
- Do your training materials include a final figure/plot/graphic that summarizes what you might find in the example?
- It hasn’t been a deliberate feature. It’s a great point and thanks for the suggestion. I will see what can be done to include this.
- Can you just change the score for one word in one document but in other documents they have another score. e.g. if the context let's indicate sarcasm?
- No, scores apply to all documents.
- Is Sentiment analysis JMP or JMP Pro?
- The file Chips.jmp was added to Sample Data in 16 for both sentiment and term selection. It’s a simple alternative to aircraft incidents that works well for both.
Asia Session
- Is there a document describing how the default sentiment scores were assigned?
- What are the supported languages?
- English only at this time.
Term Selection
US/Europe Session
- How does term selection compare to discriminant analysis?
- Discriminant Analysis is better aimed at document classification, without much of an explanatory component. Term Selection is good for identifying specific terms most strongly associated with some outcome.
- Is there a recommendation on how many terms should be added, will we run into "overfitting" issues with too many terms (or singularities)?
- I don't think too many terms is an issue. The GenReg will throw out the terms that don't seem to have predictive value.
- GenReg will use what method? lasso, best fit, ..? and can we change the default?
- Defaults to elastic net and you can also change it to lasso. I don't think there's a way to change the default.
- How is this different than what is in 15 based on modeling with the DTM?
- This workflow is really just a compression to make it easy to curate your terms before saving out a DTM and jmping to full fledged genreg.
- This is a better workflow, much more customer friendly. Also, summary output is informative. Also, GenReg defaults are purposely chosen and perhaps better than what might be used with a do-it-yourself approach.
- Is it using 0s and 1s for terms for the modeling? Just wondering what's under the hood.
- The DTM depends on the setting in the dialog: Binary, Ternary, TFIDF, etc.
- If you use Binary, yes. There are other options. This just simplifies the workflow. Binary is good because the coefficients are interpretable.
Asia Session
- The color-coded bar graphs in the display tables were a popular feature. Is this feature available through JSL?
- Is it possible to pass other (non-text) predictors into the model fitting? Is there a recommended workflow for doing this?
EWMA Charts
US/Europe Session
Asia Session
- The old EWMA chart allowed the user to specify the multiplier (K-sigma) for the control limits. It’s not clear how this is done (or possible) with the new EWMA chart. Is it fixed at 3?
Project Improvements
US/Europe Session
- Can you drag/drop the file from the Workspace into the "Contents" area?
- You can drag and drop from Workspace to Contents. You can also drag and drop from File Explorer (Windows) to Contents. I haven’t tried Finder (MACOS) but it probably works too.
- Can you move the *.jmp file to a different directory?
- I need some clarification on this question. If you have folders and files in Contents, you can drag and drop files into folders and between folders.
- Can project contents navigate the contents of a JMP Live server? More generally, are there any opportunities with enhanced projects in JMP 16 that help us position JMP Live?
- Perhaps a developer can chime in if there are opportunities to interact with JMP Live.
- Recall that Contents are stored inside the Project.
- In terms of linking to files in the cloud, SharePoint for example, it’s not clear how to do this. Of course you can link to files in OneDrive (on the PC side).
- Comment from Mike A: scripting / automating publishing can be easier. The paths are controlled so scripts can be more robust.
- One gotcha I encountered is with the path to files inside of projects. They have their own “directory”: jmpprj://contents/Episode 1 - What is Data/Episode 1_SYCU_What is Data.jrn
- Comments about the issue of duplicate “Silos” of data.
- Great functionality. Will need to caution users that there could be duplicate versions of the same file existing in a directory as the original version, and in projects as other versions. Is this correct?
- Hyde will EA videos be available to users after the release. We can post to Community?
- Internally, the videos will be available.
- EA videos here: https://rndconfluence.sas.com/confluence/display/JMPPRODMGMT/JMP+16+EA+videos
- From Mia: some of the EA videos were recorded early in the EA cycle, so features might have changed during the cycle. The videos are, for the most part, not polished, but it might make sense to make some of them available on the community.
- From Jeff: We should cover new JMP 16 material as a part of Mastering or in tutorial videos (Ryan D. can help with that). As Sara points out the EA videos are not meant for broad public consumption and should not be used that way.
- From Gail: Hyde will present NEW IN JMP 16 on April 16 and after he has the agenda finalized we will have the key areas available in customer-facing videos. I used to break them in segments - decision on that pending....
- Is the old “Archive” feature deprecated?
- I've confirmed that Archive was removed - Defect S1562819
- Do individual projects have their own name spaces? Or another way - could you get a script in one project accidentally interacting with one in another project.
- From Dan S.: I ran a test to confirm what I thought. Internally each Project runs in a "Workspace", which is a little more than a Namespace. They have completely private lists of tables, global variables, Current Data Table(), etc. Workspaces are not visible to scripters, but there is the Window > "Move to/from project" menu, and you could have a script that creates a project from within another project. Aaron is definitely the best source for further details, hope that helps some.
Asia Session
- Project vs Journal, which one is more recommended for a demo ?
- Both are great choices. This can come down to personal preference. Projects are especially good if a customer wants a copy of the material. In this case, everything is wrapped up in a single file.
- Can JMP 16 read a project file created in an earlier version (prior to JMP 15) ?
- Yes, this will work. There is a caution about opening a JMP 16 project in JMP 15, this does not work well. Look for a customer guide on migrating projects to JMP 16. This will be important for customers during the transition period from an earlier version of JMP to JMP 16. This will be added to the Quick Start guide.
Journal Improvements
US/Europe Session
- Does that flashing at the top of the journal indicate that it is unlocked? if so, can it be disabled for unlocked journals?
- Yes, flashing line, which is the insertion cursor, is an indication the journal is unlocked.
- I don’t see how to disable it, other than locking the journal. Perhaps when presenting demos from journals, best practice is to lock the journal. This will eliminate the editing features that might be distracting to some customers.
- Does the “Next” feature work with locked journals.
- Yes
- Need some clarification on this comment: other things (like grabbing outline boxes) run into issues.
- Will images resized in the journal maintain the new size when the journal is saved and re-opened?
- Yes, resizing is much improved. Saving the journal will save the adjusted sizes.
- Pictures can be resized by mouse-dragging on the corner of the picture.
- Can also be precisely resized using Properties panel. Select the picture and look for “Pict Box” and “Width” & “Height” number edit boxes.
- Any jrn issues between version? opening 15 jrn in 16 vice versa
- Opening earlier journals is not a problem.
- Opening a JMP 16 created journal in earlier versions could cause problems if the new features are used (Script Boxes for example).
- So the insertion cursor works for items from the toolbar but a graph always goes to the bottom?
- If you have a report and save it to the journal, it appears to add it at the bottom of the journal, even if the Insertion Cursor is pointing somewhere else.
- Perhaps a developer can chime in if this was the intended behavior.
- Normally, when a new item is added to the journal, the insertion cursor repositions immediately below the new item. This can be especially helpful in many circumstances. If you repeatedly double click on the text box (in the box toolbar), you get a list of text boxes (try this, you will like it). With Outline boxes, the cursor positions inside the new Outline box. If you want a series of Outline boxes, it is a little trickier (might be a bug). You can double click, up-arrow twice, double click, up-arrow twice …
- Has anyone tried the Sledgehammer with JMP 16? Do I need to fix anything?
- I have tried the Sledgehammer and there are some issues – need some clarification.
- Sledgehammer does many things, still very useful to keep around!
- JMP 16 do Slides into Journal like the Sledgehammer?
- One of several reasons Sledgehammer is still very useful.
- Can you change font of some words within a sentence?
- there’s a neat little feature for text boxes that allow you to use HTML markup, so you can do some word-wise formatting. Need some clarification on this.
- So a tab page (at this time) is just a title box?
- Might need some help with this box.
- In the Properties panel, in the stretching section, you change “Stretch” to “Window” or “Fill” and this will create a banner which can be a nice feature in a journal.
- Anybody tried to put a journal like this (with Jsl and outputs) as a pdf or other document?
- The PDF shows boxes for the script and the log. However, they are empty (doesn’t show the JSL or the log output). Also, the output report doesn’t appear in the PDF.

Profiler Extrapolation Control
US/Europe Session
- Is this Pro only? Or can you turn it on for any profiler?
- This is a Pro only feature.
- In that list it looked like there were many modeling platforms supporting this feature. Which ones do not allow profiler extrapolation control?
- The most prominent are the tree-based methods: Partition, Bootstrap Forest and Boosted Tree. K Nearest Neighbors and Discriminant are also not supported.
- The journal and Quick Start guide have been updated with this detail.
- If you turn on warnings that will stop you from using extrapolation in the maximize desirability is that correct?
- “On” and “Warnings On” both restrict the space and will produce very similar results (not identical) when maximizing for desirability.
- So the optimizer will only provide solutions within the convex hull?
- Please see this white paper for a detailed description: link.
- Disallowed combinations is in JMP ? or also just in pro?
- Some comments about using standard JMP for modeling.
- This [extrapolation control] seems like something that should be in regular JMP as well.
- I get the impression that regular JMP might then mislead people without this option
- Not using cross-validation will also mislead you. I think that's always been an issue with using standard jmp for modeling.
- Or at least for the general populous who do not verify the optimal setting within the space of the data.
- I always tell my customers that if building models and predicting results is very important to them, they will want/need JMP Pro. It is very easy to show examples of why this is true.
Asia Session
- Is the recommendation to leave extrapolation control on or off as a default?
- Perhaps a developer can chime in on this question?
- My thought is to use “Warning On” as the default. This allows the user to explore the trade-off space but also be aware of when there is possible danger of extreme extrapolation.
- Note, there is a setting that is available in Preferences for the Profiler. Search for “Extrapolation Control Option”.
