Academic Team Update
The Academic Team had a busy fourth quarter in 2020.
News from Asia: JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, which is in the top 10 for pharmacy and 33rd for top universities in India, has adopted JMP across departments. To begin with, JMP will be part of Business Research Methods, which is a common course for many departments. JMP will also be integrated into Design of Experiments and Introductory Statistics courses.
News from Americas: Longtime customer Virginia Tech is now installing JMP Pro on every incoming freshman’s computer in the College of Engineering and the College of Business, allowing students access for all four years they are enrolled. JMP has also become a corporate partner of Virginia Tech, meaning the school will provide access to JMP to graduates and faculty for research projects and recruitment, short course development, and course materials feedback and improvement.
New Mexico State University (NMSU), a comprehensive research university dedicated to teaching and research at all levels, recently obtained a campus-wide JMP Academic Suite license. The university will use JMP Pro in numerous honors college courses and academic research through the Plant & Environmental Sciences, Biology, Statistics, and Range Sciences departments, as well as the College of Agriculture. The JMP Academic Team looks forward to helping NMSU expand its usage throughout the campus in the coming year with JMP Discovered events.
George Mason University (GMU) has used JMP in its statistics group within the College of Engineering for a few years. The university recently expanded its use of JMP and began incorporating it into analytics courses within the business school. GMU currently offers a BS in business analytics, a five-course certificate program, and a recently launched master's degree in business analytics. Curt Hinrichs says, “To facilitate adoption, we delivered a six-part webinar series to the faculty for these programs, showcasing the platforms in JMP that are aligned with their newly created curriculum.”
JMP Academic Suite licenses were also obtained in Q4 by Fordham University; Mississippi State University; University of Rhode Island; University of Lethbridge; United States Military Academy; McMaster University; California State University, East Bay; Wayne State University; and City University of New York Graduate School.
News from EMEA: With close to 15,000 students, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) Berlin is the largest university of applied sciences in Germany’s capital city. Early in 2020, longtime JMP champion Prof. Ulrike Nikutta-Wasmuht from Freie Universität Berlin was asked to co-teach Data Science in Business Communication during the summer term. Technical problems with online instruction disqualified SPSS, and Ulrike decided against using R, instead requesting JMP. The summer course was supported by an academic evaluation license and workshops designed for both the lecturers and the students. Backed up by very positive student feedback, the school chose JMP for future courses. After getting an official campus-wide Academic Suite, HTW is now considering using JMP for other courses and online exams.
Additional resources: Curt adds, “Open source software like R and Python are widely used in academia and in some industries. We’ve worked closely with professors at the University of Colorado Denver, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Texas at Dallas, among other schools, to position the JMP and open source synergy for teaching and applications in academia.” To support this synergy at scale, Ruth Hummel published a JMP white paper in early 2020, which became the most popular asset in the JMP Resource Center in 2020. Ruth was asked to join a special invited session at the Symposium on Data Science and Statistics (SDSS), along with James Harroun from SAS and well-known JMP champion Dick De Veaux, on maximizing potential by combining commercial software with open source tools. Ruth also covered this topic in a webinar in the JMP Academic Webinar Series.
Curt concludes, “From the SDSS session, Ruth published a paper, with Nascif Abdoullah-Neto and Meijian Guan, in ISI’s Journal for the Rapid Dissemination of Statistical Research, which provided greater detail of examples of applications using JMP with R or Python. This paper will be ungated and available for free access soon. We hope our materials are also helpful to others; you can find these and more in the active discussion happening on this topic in the JMP Product Management Library.”
