On December 9 JMP presented our latest offering of Statistically Speaking, The Analytics Workflow for Scientists and Engineers. With 2,130 registered attendees, the event was a huge success and introduced JMP to a number of new, prospective users.
Nick Desbarats, an independent data visualization and dashboard design educator and consultant, provided the keynote address, then was joined by JMP’s Aurora Tiffany-Davis and Alex Pamatat, IT Solutions Manager at NXP Semiconductors for a panel presentation. (Here is more information on Alex and his colleagues at NXP are using JMP). The event discussed the power of dashboards for effectively (and quickly) getting from data to decision and for communicating your data discoveries. The panel covered a variety of related topics, including using the right data, how to make graphical analysis and routines repeatable and how to communicate model results with effective visualization techniques.
To help JMP sales team engage in more meaningful and productive post-event conversations with customers and prospects, we’ve created the following list of recommended resources to position after the event has concluded. This list pulls appropriate assets from across our web site, and includes white papers, articles, book chapters, webinars, JMP On Air episodes, blogs, and more.
Any asset appearing on this list is considered relevant to the topic, application area or industry, performs well and is recent enough to share. To help distinguish between resources, we also include a short summary, a few words of commentary and a 4-star system to identify the "best of the best." (You can also find all past resource recommendations here.)
If you have any questions about recommendations related to this event, please feel free to contact me.

Learn more about dashboards in JMP
December 9, 2020, The Analytics Workflow for Scientists and Engineers
4 Stars Dashboard Building with JMP, Technically Speaking webinar
One of our anchor resources on dashboard building, this Technically Speaking event has been viewed 400+ times in 2020. Strong discussion around customized dashboards and how they can reduce time spent managing data and writing code. Webinar includes a case study, demonstrating how to use the Dashboard Builder and bypass coding. Includes a section on how to publish dashboard and share with others.
4 Stars Beyond Dashboards: Designing Dashboards That Users Actually Like, Explorers session
A more advanced dashboard building talk, this Explorers session is one of our more popular resources (more than 1,300 views since we published it in September 2019). This on-demand resource examines some of the reasons dashboards fail to satisfy users and organizational expectations. It’s presented by keynote speaker Nick Desbarats who also identifies the 12 fundamentally types of information displays that are all (unfortunately) called “dashboards.” He also shows best practices for dashboard design.
4 Stars Building Dashboards to Access and Share Updated Analyses Mastering JMP video
JMP’s Jerry Fish talks about how to easily, with no scripting required, build a single presentation-ready dashboard to run and present reports on a regular basis. Jerry shows how to build the dashboard by combining windows or by starting with a template, clicking report components, aggregating reports, and inserting graphs and pictures. He also shows viewers how to save and share the dashboard so others can run, interact with, and explore the reports. Webinar uses San Francisco crime data in a case study approach. A very hands-on software sort of resource.
3 Stars Using the Dashboard Builder in JMP, You Tube Video
This is an older video (2016) on our YouTube JMP Software Channel but very popular. (It’s gotten 5,100+ views). This short video (3:43) walks you through the process of combining multiple reports with Dashboard Builder. Though high-level, it does hit on all the major features and uses football data to demonstrate how to build a dashboard in JMP. Very interesting to a sports fan, like me. It gets 3 stars because of it’s age.
3 Stars The Judgement Calls We Make in Dashboard Designs, Analytically Speaking
In this Analytically Speaking session Anne Miley sits down with Nick Desbarats (the keynote for the Statistically Speaking event) to discuss dashboards. Nick talks about how we often make judgment calls on what information to include in visualizations. He encourages us to recognize the subjective nature of creating data visualizations and advises us to strive for “neutral” or “unbiased” charts. He also discusses how to create a “friendlier” dot plot, how to increase graphical literacy, and some confusion and controversy that can occur in dashboard design.
