Data Visualization took center stage for JMP Europe’s latest Statistically Speaking event: Data Visualisation for Scientists and Engineers. More than 1,600 individuals registered for the event. After delivering his keynote address, Alberto Cairo was joined by a panel of industry experts for an in-depth discussion around how scientists and engineers use data visualization to explore data and communicate their findings.
To help JMP sales team engage in more meaningful and productive post-event conversations with customers and prospects, we’ve created the following list of recommended resources to position after the event has concluded. This list pulls appropriate assets from across our web site, and includes white papers, articles, book chapters, webinars, JMP On Air episodes, blogs, STIPS modules and more.
If you have any questions about recommendations related to this event, please feel free to contact Carla Paquet, Nina Chan or Larry LaRusso.

JMP Europe Marketing has already shared a post-event email with attendees. It included the following call to actions:
November 19, Data Visualization for Scientists and Engineers
4 Stars Episode 19 JMP On Air, Data Visualization Episode, Multiple Speakers
This was a special theme-based episode of JMP On Air, focused on data visualization. The two-hour session includes talks from Wendy Tseng (collaborative platforms); Ross Metusalem (Getting High Quality Visualizations into Presentations); Peter Hersh (Virtual Joins); Phil Kay (Visualizing Complex Behaviors); Mike Anderson (Graph Varieties). All topics are great, but it might be a lot to ask someone to invest two hours. If that’s the case, consider sharing Xan’s “All Graphs are Wrong, but Some are Useful,” session only.
All Graphs are Wrong, but Some are Useful, JMP On Air Session within Episode 19, Xan Gregg
This Featured Program for one of our JMP on Air episodes is a very strong presentation, shows the current version of JMP and it’s easy to digest. It’s also a modest time commitment for prospects. Xan talks about how effective data visualization is for understanding information, but it can be an imperfect. He explains how understanding visual perception can help us make more effective data visualizations and shows how JMP Graph Builder can improve the presentation of your data to tell a clearer story.
4 Stars Data Visualization Best Practices Can Transform the Work of Scientists and Engineers, Statistically Speaking
Definitely one of our strongest assets. This session includes a strong keynote and panel presentation. The keynote, Eight Data Visualization Myths, is presented by Nick Desbarats and gives good examples of good (and bad) chart design and goes into very interesting discussion around brain science and how to influence how people perceive data. The panel includes Desbarats, Chris Chen (W.L. Gore) and Xan Gregg (JMP) and goes deeper into data visualization best practices to help audiences understand your story, particularly at engineering and science organizations.
4 Stars Alberto Cairo: Why a picture isn’t necessarily worth a thousand words, JMP Blog, Nina Chan interviews Alberto Cairo
Very strong “interview style” blog from keynote speaker, Alberto Cairo. The blog is from 2019 and is popular with blog readers. In this blog, Nina interviews Jorge to discuss concepts from his book, How Charts Lie.
3 Stars Going Beyond Spreadsheet Analytics with Visual Data Discovery, Technically Speaking
Dan Valente and Scott Wise go through this case study which shows you how to easily pull in data from spreadsheets and other sources into JMP to do your data discovery. Includes tips for building visualizations and statistical models. Also, some discussion around reports and dynamic dashboards. The landing page also gives you the ability to download .xls worksheets and JMP data table to try for yourself. The landing page also promotes the JMP trial. Only around 100 views in the last 365 days, but those who do view watch most (or all) of the webinar. Average nearly 18:00 of view time in the 30:00 video.
3 Stars Coloplast, Customer Success Story
The story has a data visualization angle but focuses more on how they applied design of experiments (DOE) techniques to reduce costs, accelerate processes and ensure the highest possible product quality. Coloplast was a panelist on this Stat Speaking session, though, so the connection to anyone who attended the event will be strong.
3 Stars Working with and Interpreting COVID Data, Non-Series Webinar with Byron Winegard
Though the topic is not explicitly about visualizing your data, Bryon shows JMP’s superiority in this area. Given the timeliness of topic and how familiar pandemic data is to the majority of prospects, this could be an appealing asset to share. It is one of our more popular webinars, with more than 1,600 views (>100 views a day) since it’s release at the end of March. More than 500 views, however, came on the day of the live session.
3 Stars 5 Steps to Successful Data Visualizations, JMP Blog, Nina Chan interviews Jorge Camoes
This blog is from 2017, but it is very popular with readers, have accumulated more than 12,000 views in the last three years. In this blog, Nina interviews Jorge to discuss his popular blog Excel Charts, in which he shares strategies for getting the most out of data with common tools like Excel and his book Data at Work, where he explores these themes and strategies for implementing executive dashboards. Nina also references his strong JMP Explorers seminar.
2 Stars Effective Visualization Techniques for Data Discovery and Analysis, White Paper
This is an older asset, written in 2010, so probably not the top choice, but it is our most popular data visualization white paper. Still, it does not see an overwhelming number of downloads (about 150/year). It’s fairly foundational level asset, a high-level discussion of the power of visualization for analyzing data and spotting trends.
