Best Student Poster Award<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />For US Discovery 2016, we want to start a best student poster award. Students will have to submit their posters two weeks before the submission deadline to be eligible (August 5). We will then share these posters with you, and as a committee, you will select the best student poster by August 19. We will recognize this award at the beginning of the conference. Does this idea and process work for you?
Re: Best Student Poster AwardThe conference attendees will select overall "Best Poster" which the students will be eligible for but we aren't planning a "Best Student Poster" beyond the steering committee choice.
As kathy.walker noted, we're thinking that eventually we'll offer some conference benefit to a student who submits the best poster, so this award needs to be chosen before the conference. We're trying it out this year to see if students will submit posters early in order to be considered.
This will all be something to discuss in the pre- and post-conference steering committee meetings.
Re: Best Student Poster AwardWill there also be a "peoples choice" student poster based on the attendee ratings?
Re: Best Student Poster AwardGood questions, Landon! We are taking baby steps, so this year the committee will select the student poster based on content. We want to see what kind of response we get, and then move forward. In the future, the scholarship would be used for Discovery expenses/travel.
Re: Best Student Poster AwardI like the idea.
Landon raises some good points. Financial support for travel is always important for students.
A competition is really interesting, but will require a lot of work on someone's part. If this idea gains support, perhaps it could be piggy-backed onto the SAS Shootout somehow.
Announcing the winner at the beginning would generate interest in the presentation. Another option is to allow Discovery participants to cast votes for presentations they like the most. These votes might be weighted into the final decision made by the steering committee.
Being from the academic side of things, I am biased in favor of anything that puts students (undergrad and grad) and JMP users together.
Re: Best Student Poster AwardTo me a significant part of what makes a good poster is the delivery (including Q&A) from the presenter. So would we just be judging based on the content of the poster itself or could we also ask them to record an example of what they would say to someone who walks up to their poster?
Last year we also allowed some student poster presenters to have full access to JMP at their poster stand and not use static/linked powerpoint slides, and wondered if this format will be allowed or possible for this competition?
Also wondered if the scholarship/award is intended to help with the expenses to travel to DS or is more intended to be used for their education expenses after DS? If after, then I don't really see the need to rush picking a winner before the conference starts.
Another thought could be to hold a student competition similar to the KDD Cup that could help drive more student interest and participation.
Re: Best Student Poster AwardThe final versions for posters and papers will be due August 19. Students interested in receiving this award, will need to submit their final poster by August 5. Between August 5 - August 19, the steering committee will select the best student poster. The award will be announced during the opening session of the conference so attendees can be sure to check out the poster during the conference. Because the steering committee is selecting the poster, this will hold a high level of prestige. In the future, the goal is to offer some type of scholarship to a student and this is the first step toward that goal. We can discuss after the conference to review the process and determine next steps.
Re: Best Student Poster AwardOverall, this seems an excellent idea. Can you clarify the intent of the submission deadline. I assume this is similar to the usual deadline for submitting final versions of talks. Will the selection process be based upon the votes of the attendees? This seems the best way to select a best student poster.

Re: Best Student Poster AwardSounds good, but August is holiday time here in Germany and I'm afraid that I might not be available for voting ...
Re: Best Student Poster AwardSounds like a great idea, I fully support it.
