JMP as a data transformer?Hi all,
a customer I talked to today is planning the future software landscape. They already use JMP in several countries and at an advanced level.
They now had an idea which I never heard of in a real world application, and asked for my comments/suggestions:
They want to use JMP as tool for transforming log-files from their machines and want JMP to write those on a database.
At the moment they are using other software for this, and JMP only for the data analysis. So they think they could replace the other software with JMP and use JMP for both tasks. Below is a schematic drawing of the current state.

Does anybody have any thoughts, experiences or advice for me?
Thank you all in advance!
Best regards,
Florian
Re: JMP as a data transformer?Hi Florian,
before telling if JMP can do this, I believe the following is most important:
- will the log files have a similar pattern, so are there e.g. keywords to let you know where to extract the information necessary to be written into the database.
- will this be a 24/7 task to be fullfilled? This might lead into an operational risk when using JMP to do that.
If that's not the case my answer would be "maybe, but this is a huge effort and I doubt you would have fun going forward with this"
If there is a pattern and the log files might be in pdf, you could extract the information as tables. If it is text like csv or ASCII you could do similar things. After import you could use regexp and recode to extract the important information to be send to the db.
I have not seen that so far, but I can imagine it will work. However, this probably is a huge effort anyway if you are not experiences in extracting text from documents.
Re: JMP as a data transformer?Hi Martin,
thanks for responding.
The files are ".log" and in a text/csv-like shape; they can be imported equally.
Currently the data is analyzed once per day.
Thank you for your feedback!
Best regards
Florian
