Distinguishing different types of variables via symbols<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />I would like to be able to know if a nominal variable is a text variable or has actual numbers in it?. I'm assuming that the "red bar chart" symbol means "nominal" vs. the "green" which means "ordinal", but I don't know how to find just my nominal variables that contain only text (from open ended questions).
Re: Distinguishing different types of variables via symbolsIn a JMP data table, numeric columns are right justified and character columns are left justified.

Re: Distinguishing different types of variables via symbolsSorry, the Data Type is where you will find Character or Numeric, not in Modeling Type as stated above.
Re: Distinguishing different types of variables via symbolsHello,
I am not sure this is the answer you are looking for, but to determine whether a nominal data type is considered "character" or "numeric" you can right click on the column header of interest and go to Column Info. You will see the Data Type and Modeling Type listed there. If your column has any kind of character data in it the column will have a Modeling Type listed as Character and the data in column will be left justified. Nominal Numeric is typically right justified in the column similar to continuous data.
Hope this is helpful.
Best,
Bill
