Using the Select Column Before Opening Feature in JMP
Summary
You can now select Columns before opening a data table. If you're not planning on using all of the columns in your analysis then you can create a new data table with only the columns you’re interested in and use less memory. This reduces the amount of memory that a data table uses. And if your data table has lots of columns, especially long character columns, it will take a significant amount of memory to hold it.

I discovered a new simple option right after I upgraded to JMP 13. You can now select Columns before opening a data table.
If your accessing a large data table with many columns or long character columns, you can maximize your memory usage and analysis time by picking the columns pertinent to your specific analysis before you even open a data table.
This feature creates a new data table with only your selected columns and saving that new data table will have ONLY have those columns in it plus any additions changes that you make.
The big reason you’ll want to do this is to reduce the amount of memory that a data table uses.
This is useful if you want to analyze a portion of the data such as adding a formula to a particular column, visualizing the amount of data you have with Row and Column quantities before opening and simplifying your data by selecting only pertinent Cols.
In JMP open select File then open, then select your JMP file.
You’ll now see a radio button you can toggle on, Select Columns before opening, so I’ll select that.
Select Open, then view the summary information, then select the Columns you want, then select OK.
There we go, we can now allocate more memory to only the data we’re analyzing. I hope you find this handy. Enjoy using JMP and thanks for watching.
