Steering Committee
What does the Steering Committee do?
- The committee guides Discovery Summit decisions and provides suggestions. The committee doesn’t determine decisions but makes suggestions. JMP makes the final decision.
- The committee’s main role is to select paper and poster presenters. The committee rates abstracts using the online system, OpenWater. Then we meet with committee to make final paper and poster selections.
- The committee helps promote the conference through their networks.
- At the conference, the committee acts as hosts in the breakout paper sessions. The committee members introduce paper breakout presenters and facilitate Q&A.
- At the conference, the committee gathers feedback from attendees and shares this feedback with JMP.
- Before Discovery Summit, we hold a pre-conference meeting. Right after Discovery, we hold a post-conference meeting with the committee. If we are onsite, the meeting is in-person. If virtual, the meeting is online.
- Pre-conference meeting:
- Review committee assignments for the conference.
- Answer any questions.
- Tour onsite conference venue.
- Post-conference meeting:
- Discuss what worked.
- Areas for improvement.
- Suggestions for future conferences.
- A few weeks after the conference is over, we meet again to review post-event survey results. The committee may have suggestions based off the survey results or have new ideas to share.
How to select Steering Committee members:
- Ask JMP staff for Steering Committee recommendations, never promising a position to any customer.
- Best to have at least one JMP/SAS employee on the committee. This is helpful since this person understands JMP goals and can bring these ideas/thoughts to the committee.
- Committee members are on a three-year term, rotating on/off various years, so there are always experienced members on the committee and new ones joining.
- Do not select Steering Committee members based on potential sales or current revenue from an organization.
- New Steering Committee members join at the end of the conference, so new members attend the post-conference steering committee meeting. New members need to attend Discovery the year they are joining so they can provide feedback at post-conference meeting.
- When selecting new members, consider:
- Geographic balance.
- Type of organization.
- Industry representation.
- Application of JMP.
- Which JMP/SAS products they use.
- Past activity with JMP or SAS users groups and events.
- The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these characteristics:
- Passionate user of one or more JMP products.
- Attended a recent Discovery Summit.
- From a corporate, academic or research institution that holds JMP licenses.
- Leadership and networking abilities.
- Time and flexibility to attend monthly conference calls, promote the event, and help plan the conference.
- Availability to attend Discovery Summit, a pre-conference meeting, and a post-conference meeting for all three years on the committee. Plus, join post-conference meeting they year they join committee.
- Vocal advocate of JMP and SAS.
- Work for a well-respected, recognizable organization.
Steering Committee’s Mission Statement:
The charter of the Discovery Steering Committee is to help grow the Discovery conference and to grow the use of JMP software for statistical discovery outside of the conference. Members of the Committee advocate the use of advanced analytics and educate others about the many uses of JMP with the goal of nurturing budding analytic champions whose statistical analysis weapon of choice is JMP. Also with the goal of nurturing JMP users – those at all levels of expertise, in a myriad of disciplines – Committee members work with SAS staffers to grow the Discovery conference annually into an important event that helps JMP users worldwide use the software more efficiently and comprehensively. Specific conference responsibilities include helping identify appropriate speakers, aiding in the selection of papers and posters, and acting as a host at the event in a variety of capacities. Committee members will also have a visible presence in conference promotional materials and will be expected to serve on the Committee for three years.
Steering Committee members receive:
- Complimentary registration and travel costs associated with Discovery all three years of his or her service on the committee. We also pay for their travel for the year that they join the committee. This is at the end of the conference. So technically, we pay for 4 years of travel.
- Visibility as a leader in the analytic world.
