Utah March 2016<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />Note: All on-site activity will be logged in the following SalesForce Campaign: https://na20.salesforce.com/70114000000vLvE
Overview: Collaborate with Peter Hersch and commercial team to work with area companies to identify needs and universities they recruit heavily from. Drive usage at engineering programs at these schools.
Ideas:
- Working with Peter Hersch and customers at IM Flash and US Synthetic
- Visit key schools these companies recruit from around the JMP User Group meeting March 10
- Targeted video to communicate needs to use at schools and post: 2-3 minutes for engineering, with interviews
- Pull job postings from big companies (flash at end of video)
Key schools:
- Utah State University – Logan (New opportunity – Chuck coordinate)
- Utah Valley University – Orem (New opportunity – Chuck)
- BYU – Provo (Existing license, expansion – Mia)
- University of Utah – Salt Lake City (Existing license, expansion – Julian)
Company information:
- IM Flash: 4000 N Flash Dr, Lehi, UT 84043
- US Synthetic: 1260 South 1600 West, Orem, UT 84058
- Guru Labs: 1148 Legacy Crossing Boulevard #200, Centerville, UT 84014
Schedule (working):
March 8 – BYU,
March 9 – Record videos at IM Flash and US Synthetic
March 10 – Utah State(?) morning, 3:00 JMP User Group
Distances from Salt Lake City:
- Logan is 82 miles north
- Provo is 45 miles south
- Orem is 41 miles south, just north of Provo
- Centerville is 14 miles north
Potential questions for video:
- Describe what your company does
- What is your job? What is your role? How long have you been with your company?
- Describe how you use statistics in your job
- What percentage of your job involves the use of statistics/analytics?
- In terms of statistics and analysis, what do you wish you had learned in college?
- What are some of the most important things that you learned in college?
- What statistical skills do you think are most important for engineers?
- Finish this sentence: "The ideal engineering statistics course covers/includes/teaches..."
- How often do you use JMP?
- Why do you use JMP?
- What are some of your favorite features of JMP?
- Talk about the importance of designed experiments for engineers...
- How does random variation impact what you do as engineers?
- What do you love about data analysis?
- What advice would you give to engineering students who are learning statistics right now?
US Synthetic
Schools:
- Utah State
- BYU – Manufacturing Engineering is good
- University of Utah – not as good in manufacturing engineering
- Utah Valley University – Uses Minigat in Stat Program, largest in the state, Jared Chapman teaches stats in Business.
Hirings:
- * Mechanical engineers
- * Manufacturing engineers – a little better stat background
- Electrical engineering and chemical engineering
What is Missing/Important:
- Students don’t appreciate analysis and DOE
- Story problems – new engineers expect story problems to be given rather than writing it themselves
- DOE – idea of building a model, and thinking in terms of models
- Visualizing data – communicating results effectively
- Basic statistical skills – dealing with measurement variation
- Takes 6 months to 1 year to bring up to speed
- **Problem solvers – you’re sending students who can’t solve problems. The theory can be looked up
IM Flash
Gaps/Needs:
- Data Intuition
- SPC – trends/shifts
- Sample size and power
- DOE – apply – how to use, interpret (fit model, profiler, what is the model telling me about what I want to learn)
- We can do 25 runs – need to know about efficient designs
Bob Davis - Observations from on-site statistics training classes
- Most new engineers have at best a single stats course, often it is within the engineering department and not from the math/stats department
- Little to no understanding of how statistics apply to the real world or other engineering courses
- Important for engineers to understand the theory behind statistics
- Oftentimes, people misinterpret the stats (e.g. using the anova without validating or considering the assumptions) and eventually don’t trust the stats
- Without a clear understanding of when and how to apply the theory then it will often leads to erroneous results
Ideas: Provide sample data or real data collection within more of the fundamental engineering courses. For example, after learning about a chemical reaction, give them sample data of actual measured process before and after the reaction and have them analyze the data

Re: Utah March 2016Meeting 3/1/2016 with Peter Hirsh, Mia Stephens, Julian Parris
Video (Julian will contact about scheduling)
IMFlash: Bob Davis and Landon are key contacts for video
- Landon Jensen would be good to contact about a recent hire - double check NDA
US Synthetic: Jason Wiggians (jwiggins@ussynthetic.com) and Jed Campbell (jcampbell@ussynthetic.com),
and Jason Robins for new hires
Timing: Peter suggests reaching out to IM Flash first to see which time would work better. Jason (at US Synthetic) is flexible since things are slow there right now.
