How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?I often find myself trying to make "quilt" plots (see attached) using Graph Builder, but the only way I can find to do it is to make very large square-markered dots in the points plot, then try to resize the plot window perfectly and hope that it doesn't reset the marker settings in the process.
Is there a better way to make plots like this?
GraphicsRe: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Below are screenshots of the UI steps:
- Drag y to Y are and x to X area of Graphbuilder. Only point clusters appear.
- Right click in z and select Formula, The formula window appears with title Transform[z].
- On the left I opened the Function options for Statistical and captured the hover help for Col Sum() .
- Read the syntax, the ratget column( variable) is the firts argument and each subsequent argument is a Byvar. So after selecting Col Sum() click on teh z box area then press the comma and the next field/bvox will appaer, select X. Make sure the x box is highlighted and press thw comma and then click on y.
- The formula now has Col Sum( z, x, y ) See 2nd pic. Press OK
- Next drag Transform[ z ] to the Color Area. Right click on the Points and Change to HeatMap.
- Select Label, Label by Value and double click on the legend and select the color scheme for the legend.
This can all be done via UI. Of course Map regions can work as well.

Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?While I think the heat-plot is closer to what I was looking for, the maps suggestion made me look into maps which have a pretty elegant implementation, and I'm excited to use them elsewhere. Thanks for the tip!!Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Looks like you can't do the above directly from the GUI (right?) because the "aggregate" transform doesn't know which X and Y to use (right?).
(Thank you for all the info, this is super interesting and helpful! I'm slowly converting people at my work into JMP users...
)Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?@BHarris ,
You asked which statistic is used when there are multiple color values (multiple z values) per block.
As you expected the mean is used by default. However, you can use whatever statistic you prefer, but there is a method to do that. In JMP when you are prompted to cast columns into roles, you can right click on a column and specify a transform, an aggregate, a formula whatever.
Attached is a table with 3 values per color block, ie, unique x-y combination. Before dragging z to the color area, right click on z and specify formula and then select Col Sum( :z, :x, :y). This formula provides a unique value for each x-y block. So you can create any transform you prefer.
The table includes the script shown below.
Graph Builder(
Variables(
X( :x ),
Y( :y ),
Color( Transform Column( "Sum[z]", Formula( Col Sum( :z, :x, :y ) ) ) )
),
Elements( Heatmap( X, Y, Legend( 21 ), Label( "Label by Value" ) ) ),
SendToReport(
Dispatch(
{},
"400",
ScaleBox,
{Legend Model(
21,
Properties(
0,
{gradient( {Color Theme( "White to Blue" )} )},
Item ID( "Sum[z]", 1 )
),
Properties(
-1,
{gradient( {Color Theme( "White to Blue" )} )},
Item ID( "z", 1 )
)
)}
)
)
)Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Quick follow-on -- if I put a variable on "color", and there are multiple values in the data table for that color-block, which statistic does it use? mean? It'd be nice if it gave you the option to change that...Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Awesome! This is exactly what we needed, thank you! We will be using this a lot.Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Oops, I forgot to add, I specified Z as Ordinal, just to show a individual color scheme. It can also be continuous.
Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?@BHarris,
Z can be specified as color. I changed 2 to -2, see the screenshot below.

Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?This took me awhile to figure out what it was doing ... so the "Freq" box uses the variable "z" to indicate "how many times" a combination, e.g. green/b, shows up? Then the legend shows you that count?
Also, am I right that frequency can't be negative here?
Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?@BHarris ,
Jim, @txnelson , provided you with a solution. Another option is to change points to a Heat Map.
You have less control of the color with this option; map shapes are not required.
Graph Builder(
Variables( X( :x ), Y( :y ), Frequency( :z ) ),
Elements( Heatmap( X, Y, Legend( 10 ) ) )
);

Re: How to make Quilt plots in Graph Builder?Here are a couple of ideas on how you can do this using graph builder and Shape Maps. I have attached the -xy and -name files, along with the two data versions of the data file used to populate the maps. You will need to do some learning on using custom maps, but it isn't difficult.
