Questions that Jeff @Jeff_Upton will look into, and which came up in July 16, 2021 live webinar :
1. Does JMP save the script used to create a Journal? If so, how can we access it?
2. Is there a way to add special characters as text directly to a Journal? Attendee tried copying equation from MS Word into a Journal text box with some success, but not superscripts or subscripts. Could it be keybard-setting dependent or is does JMP limit ability to type special characters as text in Journal?
3. What happens if JMP 14 user opens a JMP Journal? Will the JMP 16 Journal open? What happens if the JMP 16 Journal includes some Journal features not in JMP 14?
We received some input on our questions! See below:
1) yes, there is a script behind your Journal. You can access it by changing the file extension to .jsl or via the Window("windowName") << Get Script JSL, where windowName is your Journal name wrapped with quotes (script will show in the log). Be careful, the journal script is easy to break!
2) yes, you can add special characters directly to a Journal via at least two methods. You can change your keyboard settings to include a second keyboard (i.e. Greek) or use keyboard shortcuts (i.e. for µ, alt+03bc on Windows or option+m on Mac). Super/subscript does not seem to be supported so you may need to insert pictures for formulae containing such characters.
You may also find apps with a unicode text GUI if you don't want to memorize a new keyboard or shortcuts.
3) If a JMP 14 user opens a Journal created and saved in JMP 16 then they will receive a message on opening the journal that not all features may be supported. This could lead to no issue or an unstable JMP environment prone to crashing (i.e. if JMP 16 features were implemented). We recommend folks update to the latest version of JMP to ensure a stable environment.
By the way, JMP 16.1 is now available and is compatible with Journals from legacy JMP versions...so get your update!
Thanks @Jeff_Upton ! I will tweet this info from @JMP_Tips. I encourage people to follow JMP Tips, too.
