JMP Japan Superusers Interview: Vol. 1
Tadashi Mitsui
Toshiba Semiconductor Service & Support Co., Ltd. Head of Data Science Promotion Group
JMP user history:
Since 1994
My surprising side:
My hobbies are general woodworking such as furniture making.Especially Wood Carving is seriously working, so let me introduce the work. The feature of my work is to make full use of the characteristics of natural wood without painting it. This is an accessory case with the motif of Loon (Japanese name: Hashigroabi) as a motif. The chick is a lid, and a wristwatch can be put in it.

1. Could you tell us about your current situation?
In the past few years, in the field of semiconductor research and development, JMP gradually moved from a position of "using" JMP to a position of "teaching" experimental plans using JMP as a consultant.Up until now, we have been mainly engaged in activities at affiliated companies, but in order to let more engineers know the fun of JMP, we published "Data Science Beginning with JMP" (Ohm Co., Ltd.) last year.In the future, I plan to work more freely, so I look forward to more opportunities to talk directly with JMP users.
2. What is your favorite JMP function?
In JMP, the DNA of the early Macs that I enjoyed just using it remains. As a statistical software, I am completely satisfied with that, but I like "partition" if I give only one of the many functions. It's a great feature to experience the basic concept of JMP as a model that should be interactive.
3. What was your first job?
I was engaged in the development of an ultra-high vacuum analyzer using an ion beam at the Fuchu factory in Toshiba.Since this group was involved in not only designing the equipment but also manufacturing and selling it, I did everything from simulation of the ion optical system to sheet metal processing of the equipment, sales operations, and staff at the exhibition. Now it's been a very good experience.
4. What made you interested in JMP?
After that, I will move to the position of developing new measurement technology in the field of semiconductor research and development and providing it to users. In order to improve the performance of measurement equipment, I have been working on analysis of measurement data using MATLAB for some time.At one point, I realized that I had to take care not only of improving the performance of the device, but also of making sure that the user could use the device successfully. As a Mac user from that time, it didn't take long for me to get involved with JMP.
5. What was your most proud moment as a professional?
It was when the measurement system I developed could actually be deployed in mass production plants.I can't write the details, but I think the concept is still valid as a web application that implements distributed computing.I was able to write many related patents.
6. What part of your job do you like?
When I talk about my experience as a consultant, it is what makes engineers happy. In a successful case of working on a product defect issue, "I have a problem that I haven't been able to solve for years, and now I can work on something else."I was glad that I had a hard time together.
7. How are you using JMP these days?
As a consultant business, I am very much indebted to the "experiment plan".Besides that, I am currently working on teaching statistics using JMP.In particular, there are many excellent educational scripts in the "Educational Scripts" in the "Sample Data" of the Help menu, which is very useful. Some of them are also introduced in my book, so please refer to those who are interested.
8. What was your first project using JMP?
It was in the latter half of 1990 that JMP was directly useful for work. It's been more than 20 years since then, and at that time, I was in charge of measuring equipment at a semiconductor mass-production factory in Virginia, USA.The characteristic of semiconductor products is that they are stratified into lots, wafers, and chips. Therefore, we were able to analyze the mass production measurement data and analyze the problems for each product.
9. Do you have anything to tell JMP developers or John Sall?
Just as Mac OS is changing to iOS-like, JMP should leave the DNA of Mac and continue to evolve.Personally, I would like to hear the opinions of someone like me who indirectly uses JMP as a consultant. For example, the "Journal" has various improvements that we would like to request.
10. How do you think the fields of data science and analytics will change in the future?
Many people are now paying attention to this field because it has become known that money is earned. However, considering the spread of PC software such as spreadsheets and word processors, it is normal to come after this dynamic transformation. There, it is natural to know data science, and the ability to act in combination with one's own knowledge will be of utmost importance.
