Power Users
Lene Bjørg Cesar: Science Manager, Statistician
Marianne Toft used to lead the work with JMP at Novozymes. She had worked as an Application Specialist for the Swedish JMP competitor Umetrics where she trained and consulted companies in Data Analysis before she joined Novozymes in 2009. She grew the number of users to over thousand in 8 years. She also had the technical responsibility for JMP at Novozymes and handled licenses and agreements.

Value of JMP
Departments/divisions using JMP
The first one is R&D. Novozymes has big databases full of information about their different enzyme and microbe molecules and their different qualities. They use this information to develop new enzymes and microbes with the help of JMP. JMP can for example tell them how to modify a molecule to make it more efficient or cheaper to produce.
The second big field is manufacturing and process development. Enzymes and microbes are biological products. Almost all biological products are produced in the same way: First comes fermentation where you grow the cells you need to produce the biological substance. Then you purify the biomass that you have fermented. Biological processes are often more complex than chemical processes since the biological material is more difficult to control. The processes also take place in tanks where you can’t do much to control them. You can only measure a few variables like temperature, pH, glucose, oxygen etc and then tweak these to improve yield or quality. But to fully understand what is happening, data analysis is essential and therefore JMP is used more and more at Novozymes as well as other companies who work with bioproduction.

Data Infrastructure
They are building a Data Lake to have one source of truth and all data in one place. Novozymes is gathering all their molecule and process databases in what they call a “Data Lake”, a database for databases one could say

Notes on Technical Engagement
Activity
- 12.02.2019 Intro Call, hand off from Nick Vacca, CA, Dara Hammond
- JMP Pro Thoughts – While you’re currently a JMP Pro user, very few are. You believe the goal of Novozymes is to have one JMP Pro power user at each “site”. Globally, there are about 20-25 sites, and in the US you mentioned about 5. Your team evaluated JMP Pro as there is a 3-year campaign for R&D site to do digitalization, and to analyze, understand, and model that data. [You’d simplified that for my sake so if more detail would be helpful, dive right in!] You felt this is a 1-2 year timeframe to better understand how JMP Pro can impact this campaign directly.
- Weather Project – You worked with Don McCormack to better understand the impact of noise, specifically weather noise, and to how JMP Pro’s functional data explorer may improve the data analysis. Jennifer also worked on this and has a pretty solid proof of concept. I spoke with Don this morning and understand you’ll speak next week to get an update on the progress and path forward.
- Brazil – Vanessa in Brazil may have a more immediate need for functional data explorer and how it can be implemented to better understand and improve fermentation yield. Let us know how we can assist.
- JMP Genomics – There’s interest in genome visualization but again, your opinion is you’re about 1-2 years out from genome-wide analysis and exploration. We’ll keep in touch on this.
- DOE + Machine Learning – I mentioned to Don your question around DOE and Machine Learning. He’s prepared to discuss that next week and get more information on the use case you have in mind.
- 10.07.2019 Call Sao Paulo – Brazi, Victor, Christy Spain, Laura Higgins
- Learnings: Biorefining – second gen ethanol (Biofuels)
- 20 people in R&D analysis
- Power analysis to data analysis – conrol vs treatment (6 month time frame)
- Never had anyone come from JMP/SAS. Did have internal people come down. Jasper Freemon? Did training. Who is this? 4 years ago. Victor wasn’t there for this.
- Biorefining and feed applications.
- Robert Osborne. Group leader.
- Corn ethanol.
- 2 people use it a lot like DOE design. Most people use it for simple analysis.
- Users scientists – proficient in English so ok. Associates not so much.
- TS – more challenge – located at customer sites.
- 14.3 version JMP.
- Some people still on 12 (past version).
- Sounds like they are using STIPS – encouraged from Denmark
- Explore results
- ++Experiments trying to find the best blend for different activities. Multi Y. play with different sugar, corn etc. biomass bases. Different compositions of each. Make a cocktail for each biomass that works, is efficient and low cost for fermentable sugar. Best Blend. Cost effective. Dose, etc. give to customer. US focused on one thing.
- ++ Grabbing large sets of data from industrial customers – find conclusion if the product works on the industrial scale. Look at data for sources for error, outliers, data quality etc. Data = industrial trial sugar cane – temp, process stages, 100 columns, different states of the process. Raw material entry to output of ethanol. 3 data points per day, 30 days, 90 days. Control vs. treatment. 2-3 reps. Highest validation level you can reach. Usually just one treatment (enzyme vs. no enzyme). Or Enzyme vs competitive enzyme. Product launch – enzyme vs. no enzyme.
- Stat team in Denmark – work with them some. Get advice from them.
