Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?I am hoping to recreate what I get out of Strava in JMP. Something that looks similar to what I have below.

Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?I use caltopo.com almost exclusively.
https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=34.48845,-83.93555&z=4&b=map
There is a lot of capability built into the app. I found this easy to follow youtube video that can help you get started.

Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Thanks Jason still looking to see if these maps can be brought into JMP as background maps.
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?I have not been able to crack the code on this yet. It should be possible with a CALTOP Pro license -which I have. With a pro license you are given URLs with an API key and the ability to add custom layers. These are my available URLs

I have tried to input both WMTS and WMS URLs and a layer I built into Graph Builder. Neither URLs work

I ping CALTOPO support and got the following reply:
Hi there,
Are you using the Universal API as was mentioned in the previous help discussion you supplied? If so, I would enter your endpoint as: http://caltopo.com/api/MSNRKC/wmts/tile/t/{z}/{x}/{y}.pnghttp://caltopo.com/api/MSNRKC/wmts/tile/t/%7BZ%7D/%7BX%7D/%7BY%7D.png
Please let us know if that does it. Thank you, Rom
I am not sure what JMP expects here so I am not sure how to interpret the endpoint suggestion. Can anyone else help us get over this hurdle?
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?The JMP OpenStreetMap server supports a Web Mapping Service (WMS) API. So in the background map dialog use the WMS API provided by the server - in your case it looks like it is: http://caltopo.com/api/M5NRKC/wms. Is M5NRKC your key? If not, you probably need to provide the key as well. To do that add a question mark followed by the correct syntax for your key - such as ?key=xxxxx. That is just an example. I don't know what the correct syntax would be for your particular server.
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?To respond to the original question - the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provides some publicly available WMS servers:
https://basemap.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/services/USGSTopo/MapServer/WmsServer?
https://basemap.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/services/USGSImageryOnly/MapServer/WmsServer?
https://basemap.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/services/USGSImageryTopo/MapServer/WmsServer?
Notice the only difference is the type of map provided. One is Topo, the second is Imagery and the third is Topo and Imagery combined. In all cases, the layer is 0 (the number 0, not the letter O).
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Thank you, John. I do believe my key is M5NRKC. I will reply back with the CalTopo developers and see if I can get some clarification on the URL. For Pete USGS may work for now? For me, I use CalTopo so much that I would like to crack the code. I will post anything I learn.
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Just tried USGS url's. They work great!
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Thanks John! That is what I was looking for.
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Ok, if that is your key then the WMS URL you were using should work. The next question would be what are they returning? JMP expects an image to be returned - either JPG or PNG. I tried the WMS URL you provided and it does not work for me either. I get this message in the log:
Unknown image type while attempting to retrieve maps from WMS server.
So either they are returning an image that is a different format or we are not getting an image back at all.
BTW - in your example, you had the layer as DOERide. That doesn't appear to be a valid layer for this server. I wrote a JMP Add-In called WMS Explorer Add-In . If you run it, you can enter your WMS URL and hit enter and it will query the server and return you a list of valid Layers. You have to enter a valid Layer to get any map back from the WMS server. I do get a list of valid Layers back. That tells me that the WMS URL you are using is a valid URL. It also tells me what the valid Layers - there are 33. Unfortunately, even with a valid Layer I do not get a valid image back.

In case you can't see from the WMS Explorer screen capture, some of the valid Layers are:
mbt, mbh, t, f, f16a ..... r2, r3, N3N0S6 and M3GKMG. The last few are scrolled out of view.
Hope this helps!
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?This is awesome John! Thank you! Just loaded the add-in. This will help troubleshoot for sure.
Looks like I will also have to understand how to access custom layers. DOERide is a layer I built in caltopo. I assumed I would have access to my layers through wms with my api key.
Will let you know what I learn when I hear back from caltopo...
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?I did a little more investigation with the caltopo WMS server. For any WMS server, you can do a GetCapbilities which tells you something about what the server will provide. This is the request I use in the WMS Explorer to find out what Layers the server has. Usually when I do this I get an XML doc which tells me, among other things, the Layers and the mapping projections supported. That is important because in JMP we always use a projection called WGS84. That is signified by specifying EPSG:4326 on the map request. The caltopo server did not return me an XML doc, which was surprising. But it did show me enough in a text doc to make me think that the caltopo server only supports EPSG:900913 and EPSG:3857. 900913 is an EPSG specifically for Google Mercator and 3857 is another variation of the Mercator projection. Simply put, it looks like the caltopo server only supports a Mercator projection and JMP only supports the WGS84 projection. If that is the case, you can't use maps from caltopo in JMP. Otherwise the data will not line up in the correct location on top of the map. You may want to verify this with caltopo. But since we request EPSG4326 (WGS84) that may be why caltopo never returns a map to JMP.
Re: Anyone know of a good open webmap service to show off terrain in JMP?Just a correction. I said "The JMP OpenStreetMap server supports a Web Mapping Service (WMS) API." I should have said "JMP supports a Web Mapping Service (WMS) API." In JMP we offer both options in the background map dialog - the WMS option and the OpenStreetMap option. They are unrelated. Hope this clarifies.
