Details
Principles of Invisibility
- An "invisible feature" is any UI feature that you can't see on the screen.
- Many of the most valuable features in JMP are invisible:
- Click
- Hover
- Modifier keys: Shift, Control/Command, Alt/Option
- Right click
- Drag and drop
- Preferences
- Therefore, to take full advantage of JMP, you need to learn the invisible parts of JMP
Principles of Burial
- Always tell people that JMP is a very simple product. It has a limited number of menu commands to learn. You can just walk up and use it.
- But--buried under this simplicity, there is a deep rich complex set of features. You have to dig to find them.
- Powerful features are put inside rooms (platforms) where they are relevant.
Principles of Words
- We have a secret vocabulary. People that are not in on the secret don't know what we are talking about.
- To be powerful, you need to learn the vocabulary.
- We use the statistical vocabulary to be precise, consistent.
Why would JMP want to hide things?
- In driving a car, which should you be focusing on most of the time: the dashboard or what's in front of the car?
- In the quest to make the analysis/report the central focus of the window, JMP puts controls out of view, like in popup menus.
- In the spirit of quick paths, JMP avoids the plan-ahead style in favor of the quick-to-launch, then customize as desired. So we bury details that you can dig for later.
- Instead of modal dialogs, JMP often has control panels, which appear, and then disappear, as needed, so that it is a secret from the finished report.
- JMP needs to fold many features into a UI, thus there are many flavors of mouse behavior based on location, tool, button, modifier key and hovering. All these are invisible on the screen.
- JMP is like a small picnic basket that magically unfolds to be a picnic table, already set with place settings and food.

Secrets that everyone knows???
The secret place to click
- Little Red Triangle - hot spot
- If you don't learn the little red triangle, you are missing most of JMP features.
- The "little red triangle" menus are also available by right-click anywhere that right-click doesn't mean something else.
The Invisible secrets of platform menu items.
- How do you get a command to apply to all like objects? not just the one you are clicking in.
- Control/Command Click to broadcast
- How can a select a bunch of options without pulling down the popup menu each time?
- Alt/Option click to select multiple options
- What if I want an option, but want to specify something additional, not the default?
- Shift-click sometimes brings up dialog (e.g. Save CI)
Secret Shifts
- Some red triangle menus will reveal new options when Shift-key is used
- Bivariate paired t-test
Save Script = Save Analysis
- Beginners don't need to learn scripting, but they should learn the commands under "Save Script", though they never need to look at the script.
- If I change a column name--will that mean that I have to edit all the scripts to use the new name?
Pointing out parts of the report
- "fat plus" tool (S key)(A key)
- The Laser Pointer
- Persistent - annotation tools
- Show Properties
- Right-click "Make Combined Table"
Hovering
- over reports - making a circle
- over data points - use label
Cleaning your data with Recode
Documentation - Recode
Buffet Menu
Virtual Joins
- Get the benefits of a simple join without the associated new table creation and memory expense.
- Can be a real memory-saver, particularly when columns contain large strings or images.

Secrets to save space
Category Ghosts
- Here is something that you wouldn't even notice, but it is an important feature.
- hidden orders: months, numeric suffixes
Common Orderings
JMP automatically orders axis values for a number of common categorical values.
- Low, Medium, High
- Month Names and Abbreviations
- Weekday Names and Abbreviations

Graph Builder Secrets
- How do I order categories by another column's values?
- Drag a continuous variable into the axis’s “merge” zone.
- I have predicted and residual on separate Y Axes. How can I make the residual vertical size small than the predicted vertical size?
- Click on the Axis resize zone between them.
- When I filter, how can I keep the scaling consistent?
Reports - extracting, formatting
Concluding Irony
- JMP prides itself on having a very graphical, very interactive, very visual user interface.
- But...much of the power of JMP is delivered through the invisible interface. Ironic.
- Ghosts of the User Interface
@tsolomo1, that's a feature of JMP back to before JMP 12. I usually do it from a new, empty Journal but if you do it from a Journal with anything in it you'll need to right-click at the bottom of the Journal.

Hi, I am unable to right-click to get the save all open files. I have tried to rgith click in various locations within the journal, data table as well other locations in JMP. Am I missing something or is this a feature of JMP 15?
