Using value scores with character dataI have a data set from a web based survey. The data set was exported so that the response text that the respondent selected is in the data cell. For example if the question asked the respondent to rate their product experience on a 5 point scale, the values in the cell are the test of excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor. I would like to calculate a mean assuming that excellent = 100, very good = 75, good = 50, fair = 25, and poor = 0. I first tried a couple of different ways. When I just add value scores to the character data the calculated mean is different from when I recode the data to the numerical value and add value labels. I also tried adding parentheses to the text (e.g. excellent (100), very good (75), good (50), fair (25), poor (0). The mean in this case matches the mean when I recode the data to the numerical value with a value label. Why does adding a value score to the text produce a different mean?
Re: Using value scores with character dataYou are so right! Thanks for catching that. I completely missed it.
Re: Using value scores with character dataHi @phillips_ad_1,
In the Value Scores column property, it appears as though you have the level of "Very Good" entered as "Very good" (missing the capitalization as it is in your data). I think this is what is leading to the discrepancy.

Let me know if this doesn't fix the issue for you and we'll track it down.
