Excel import - named rangesHi,
Is it possible to import data from excel named ranges? I have workbooks containing data in named ranges and want to automate data import. The only idea i have so far is to script some "search algorithm" to find the boundaries of the named range and then using the excel import wizard.
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Maik
Re: Excel import - named rangesI re-read your original request again. It does sound like you have roughly some idea of where to look for the named ranges. I have used JSL before to search through a sheet looking for key words that I know form the header row for a data table of interest buried in an Excel sheet. It can be tedious this way too, but at least you wouldn't have to install extra software. This only seems to work, though, if you can count on your named range containing at least a couple of specific column names.
You may want to post a copy of this "import named ranges" suggestion on the JMP Wish List here: https://community.jmp.com/t5/JMP-Wish-List/idb-p/jmp-wish-list
Re: Excel import - named rangesUnfortnately, JMP does not have any support for named ranges in Excel.
I think that @mjoner's suggestion above is your best option at this point.
Re: Excel import - named rangesLet's see what the JMP folks say, but this might be something that you need to do in a different software package and then bring the result to JMP.
I am pretty sure this could be done in the R statistical software. JMP can start a copy of R, get R to import from the Excel named ranges, and send the data over to become a JMP data table. The downside to this is anyone who needs named range import now has to install two software packages, JMP and R, and figure out how to get all the required R libraries (add-ins) that can handle Excel import loaded up. It is not a ready-to-go solution.
