Scatter-Plot

When generating a scatter-plot in graph-builder sometimes the data-points are in rows and other times irregularly placed as illustrated in the attachment. Can someone please help me understand the settings used for the different results.

It looks like the plot on the left has a categorical X variable (a modeling type of Ordinal or Nominal), while the plot on the right has a continuous X variable.
