How do I connect a local JMP to R which will be on a server?
A customer is using a R library.
For them, it is not so much easy because they are developing an add- in in JMP which is calling this R library. And they give this add-in to 50/100 JMP users. They do not want to have a too much complex package.
So could we imagine to have R on a server and say to JMP to call this R session? In this situation, they will just have to provide the JMP add in and it will work.
I already do that with MATLAB so I think that it is possible, and we probably have to define the path system to the correct R_HOME. Is it ok? the documentation says to install R on the same computer but with the R_HOME correctly defined, it should work, no?
If JMP is able to find R on a server, it is nice. But can several JMP access to the R at the same time? If not, do you have any workaround?
Thank a lot for your suggestions,
Re: How do I connect a local JMP to R which will be on a server? This thread on the user community may help answer your question. @ian_jmp and @Jeff_Perkinson have answered this what is currently possible well:
Ian:
"As has been said already, R and JMP must reside on the same computer for the 'out of the box' integration to work. I'm doubtful that you could make it work any other way, but even if you could, I believe it would be regarded as 'unsupported'. You might be able to do something for yourself, of course."
Jeff:
My colleague, @ian_jmp, is correct but to expand on it a bit more...
JMP and R communicate interprocess. That is, JMP opens R and communicates with it in-memory. This same kind of communication just isn't possible if R isn't running on the same machine.
Do you have a server version of R, like Microsoft R Server or do you just have a regular R distribution installed on a server? JMP can't communicate with the Microsoft R Server right now but with enough requests we could investigate whether that was feasible.
Dan:
This is still the status quo as of JMP 13.2 and JMP 14.0. Certainly open to suggestions for the future, but this is how it is planned to stay as of right now.
Re: How do I connect a local JMP to R which will be on a server?Just checking in on this thread - safe to assume the status quo holds for v15 as well?
I had a similar request about documentation for integration of JMP with R, SAS, and/or Python on a server for batch calls to R/Python at minimum and other integration a plus.
Thanks!
Edit: I see I missed the distinction between R and Microsoft R Server specified in Dan's reply. I'll assume the same re Microsoft R Server.
