Is it possible?
How?
Any details, testimonials or inputs would be nice!
Thank a lot,

Florence,
Same exact scenario as described by Phil at my previous company. LIMS (where all the analytical quality testing was housed) was accessed through ODBC and a script button resided on all of our workstations that would allow us to access the "locked down data" in JMP where we could do exploratory analysis. The IT group provided us with the script button.
Hi Florence,
there are as mana data management philosophies as there are LIMS Systems. Some systems maintain their data in databases then it would be possible to access them via ODBC and use our query builder. Others produce XML files that can be read with JSL. You may even find plain ASCII files or even proprietary formats. So without knowing the data management system of the specific LIMS in question the “how” question can’t be answered. And it is good to know how reporting is done because sometimes it may be easier to produce reports (EXCEL) and read these into JMP.
I would always say that we can access LIMS data but that the effort depends upon the data management system of the LIMS.
Hope that helps and best regards
Bernd
Hi Florence,
Yes.
It is something that I did a lot in my last job.
JMP was great for this because:
A) it is great at connecting with different databases
you can automate the connection and querying so that you can get up-to-date data every day, week
C) of course, it has the tools you need for exploring the data
Some things that it allowed me to do:
Very quickly identify problem results.
Compare the variability between different analysts.
Find out how many of each analysis were being carried out and then use this to estimate cost as part of "leaning" the process.
Create customised views for different users.
How do you do it? Your customer needs to get access to the database tables that sit behind the system. They will need to speak to the LIMS manager. These people are often not keen to allow people access to the tables for fear that they will be broken.
Once they have access to the tables, Query Builder is the perfect tool for them to extract only the data that they need. It is perfect application for Query Builder as they will need to join up lots of large tables and do a lot of filtering. Possibly even some splitting/stacking as a post query script.
When I was connecting to the LIMS in my last job we didn't have query builder. I had to get a SQL expert to write some very long queries.
Let me know if it would be helpful to demonstrate some of what I mean.
Regards,
Phil
