Virtual Joins in JMP have been improved, allowing a single column to be used both as a key and a reference and we've added new hover tips to determine a linked column's source table. Additionally, with virtual joins, when one of a linked set of tables is opened, the others can be automatically opened as well.
Virtual Join links a main data table to one or more auxiliary data tables. This feature enables the main data table to access data from the auxiliary data tables without physically joining the tables. Virtually joining tables saves memory, because the same data are not replicated in every table that references them. And updating linked data is simpler; linked data can be independently updated in the source table without being updated in the referencing table.
I'll demo this with the Sample Data Table in JMP called Employee Masters, which is already set up to join two other referenced tables. The two other tables will automatically be hidden when I open the parent Data Table. I'll go to the Home window and select the other two tables to make them visible. You can also go to the Window menu then choose Hidden. In each of these 3 data tables, we're using the Employee Id Column for the Link ID and using the Link Reference to connect the tables. We can right-click that Column and toggle on or off the Link ID.
Then we'll reference Education History from the Parent Data Table, Employee Masters.
In Education History, we'll reference the 3rd data table Prediction Termination.
So now our parent data table has virtually joined all three tables because it includes all of the other referenced data tables like links in a chain.
If we want to automatically open the referenced data tables when we launch the parent data table, we can Right-click the column select Column Info then under Link Reference select Auto Open.
You can try Multitable Virtual Join in JMP now by using the Employee Master sample data table.
