Explain the JMP point of view:
Because JMP does everything in memory we are trying to protect our assets against a negative user experience.
Let them know JMP documents the architecture to ensure it is an environment that we can support and warrant
It allows technical support to identify and troubleshoot to their particular environment
Let them know that if the architecture changes within the annual license period they need to notify us in writing to ensure we can still support and warrant the new environment
Ask for clarity on their business process:
Have them describe the users:
where the JMP users are located (same building, across the US, around the world)
Note: We have several cases where a multinational agreement should have been utilized but was not
what types of data do they access (databases, MS Excel, SAS, etc.)
what types of analyses do they typically perform
do they have access to the internet
Ask if they own the data or does the data belong to their clients
Note: we have found several cases of DSP but not licensed for such
Ask if they have ever installed JMP previously
Ask if they have ever installed JMP in the proposed architecture environment. If not, suggest a 30 day evaluation
Typical Situations:
Why JMP Customers want non-standard environments
Overloaded hardware resources
Often a JMP user does not know that IT has overloaded the environment with multiple applications, databases and users.
The only complaint from the JMP user is that when they click in the JMP application everything is taking for ever to load or process.
IT Centralization
IT Deployment Concerns related to packaging or workload
IT Security (no internet access, military, or government)
User not getting updates timely
Resolution: Overloaded hardware resources
Speak directly with IT.
Explain to IT that JMP is very memory intensiveâ
JMP is not like other Office based applications
Depending on how many windows are open and the types of analyses being performed the amount of memory consumed can be exhausted by a single user
Not uncommon for an analyst to have 40-50 different windows open during a typical analysis session
Minimum memory
Provide rule of thumb for file sizesâJMP requires 2Xs the memory as the largest file size they want to open
Multiply that by the number of users
For example, 2 gigabyte file size and 30 JMP users:
2GB file X 2 = 4GB of memory to open file
4GB X 30 JMP users = 120GB of RAM minimum
Most common architectures:
Single server
User access to JMP is through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
User access to the desktop controlled through a permissions based approach such as Active Directory (AD) groups
Single server with users accessing JMP through a virtualized desktop
The server must run a version of the Windows Server OS.
The desktop OS must be running a supported version of the Windows desktop OS
The virtualization software must be a commercially available version
Commercial virtualization software vendors are Citrix or VMWare
Access controlled through a permissions based group such as AD or through the virtualization software
Other Possible Architectures
Two (2) or more load balanced servers (variant of single server)
User access to JMP is through the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
User access to the desktop controlled through a permissions based approach such as Active Directory (AD)
Two (2) or more load balanced servers (variant of single server with virtualization)
Citrix farm (many servers running virtualized desktops)
servers spin up desktops as demand requires otherwise they remain dormant
same rules apply as noted above for virtualized environments
Development, Test and Production environments
Each environment serves a different purpose
Each environment has a different number of users
Location of users can vary by environment
Type of analyses performed can vary by user and environment
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Single Server
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Two or More Load Balanced Servers
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Two (2) or more load balanced servers (variant of single server with virtualization)
