PDF Import does not recognize X in a table

In the attached table e.g. on page 16 (left bottom page number says 14) there are many "X" used as checks in the table. Importing this table does not import those "X" but empty cells. I thought it would recognize them as character.

Any reason why this is not imported? Probably wrong font or is it a multiplication sign and therefore not recognized (seems to be adjusted to the Y-center, so differently than the other characters)? Any change to get them read in?

Additional comment: It seems that JMP recognizes a special character but is not able to  display it. Exporting to Excel or csv, will create a special character not equal the "X". Importing this exported file again does not read in the special character no matter which csv Unicode setting I use. Attached the excel and csv file. 

 

I guess this is something for technical support?
