Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />Our Mid Atlantic team has a lead that would like to explore using JMP for text analytics. I have to admit my knowledge of this application area is immature. Any experts out there among our team?
Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?Hi Byron,
I agree with Peter, especially as there are increasing number of requests from customers (not that much but this year more than in the past years) asking for text analytics (not to say text mining already). Often it is about maintenance and sometime about market Research, but especially for the first a good toolset could lead to many new talking points. I woder if this will get into Pro as it sounds like the direction will head to more mining, but maybe it's too early for Pro.
However, it's great to invest there and looking forward to working with the beta version

Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community? This is encouraging...the two potential new customers wanted a 'one stop shop' and not something that had the Add Ins, linking to R, etc. That solution just seemed too klugy to them.
Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?I got to see Heath and Jim talk about their app for text mining, and then I saw a preview of what's coming in JMP 13. It's not SAS's Text Miner, but it will have a whole new tool box that includes stemming, phrases, and an integrated recode for fixing spelling as well as singular value decomposition (finds topics), with hooks into association analysis (yep market basket for JMP13!!) Plenty of functionality for looking at text responses and documents. Can't wait to get my hands on it, having an interactive tool rather than building lists and connecting to R will be very nice.
Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?Hi Pete,
The world of text analytics and text mining is quite expansive. SAS as a product to do such things and is probably better suited that hacking it in JMP.
Here is a link about one aspect of Text Analytics:

Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?Hi Peter,
JMP is capable of counting words as Jerry already has mentioned. But this is without alllowed modifications, so "Do not" and "don't" or "apple" and "apples" or "fail" and "fails" will be counted seperately.
To get a better result you may want to recode strings to match a word Family before the analysis. Or in case you have a full string use the column utilities to seperate a string by any or multiple dividing signs like " ", ",", ";" ..., then you have each word in a seperate column and could work further with those. I think there was an example in JMP 12 Journal as well.
If you want to do real text mining you'd like the functionality of word families, context combined words like words with a negotiation like "not" or "less" and so forth. This is something where people would often use R or Rapidminer (got aquised by someone I believe) or even SAS in case they have it already.
So you Need to understand how far they want to go? I would say, in case of analyzing warranty based comments, you could start with JMP and see if that's good enough. If you want to understand social Network threads and Blogs to get insight in your Reputation and Branding Status I would look for something more powerful (so far at least).

Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community? Thanks Jerry...your input is consistent with what I've received offline outside the SE space as well.
Re: Text Analytics expertise within the JMP community?Peter,
The only ‘text mining’ option I’m aware of in JMP is the Free Text tab in the Categorical platform. This essentially does a word count which might be useful for columns containing unstructured textual data. Otherwise, most of the customers I know of that are doing any text analytics in JMP are doing so with custom JSL and/or R scripts and then using JMP to analyze results. Here is a link to one of our customer success stories describing how FMC Technologies worked with Adsurgo to develop an Add-in utilizing R for text mining and JMP for analysis:

Here’s a link to the paper and Youtube video Adsurgo presented at Discovery in 2013:

Hope this helps.
