Problem with Mac hiding desktop files and foldersAnyone else have this issue? Even when unhidden (using chflags or CMD-Shift .) they remain greyed out and I can access them from most programs. They can still be launched from the finder, but it causes a problem when I want to, say, open an Excel file in JMP.
Re: Problem with Mac hiding desktop files and folders (solved!)Still haven't found out why this is happening, but the attached code will fix it. Run it from the Mac terminal window:
xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo ./*
chflags -R nohidden ./*
killall Finder
You'll want to CD to the directory where the problem is occurring first. Kudos to Shea Craig (The Mac guy in IT support) for coming up with the idea to remove the FinderInfo extended attribute. That appears to be the linchpin.
Re: Problem with Mac hiding desktop files and foldersHmm, maybe an issue with the extended attributes? Might be worth letting Disk Utility run its full "First Aid" check
diskutil verifyVolume /
Re: Problem with Mac hiding desktop files and foldersThanks Julian,
Good idea. Gave it a try (chmod -R 755 * launched from the Desktop) without any luck. I suspect it's some weird conflict with something else I have running. Tried to move them all to another directory and back, but they remain hidden. Haven't been able to find anything on the Web. The frustrating things is that tomorrow morning, everything will be working OK. This has happened a few times before.

Re: Problem with Mac hiding desktop files and foldersSounds like maybe permissions issue? Apple removed the quite useful "Verify Disk Permissions" option from Disk Utility.app in 10.10.5, but you could propagate setting permissions for your entire user tree by going to Get Info on your home folder, then (after unlocking on the bottom right), select the gear, then Apply to Enclosed Items.
