GE Aviation – Newark DE November 17, 2015
Meeting Attendees:
Oke Uguru (Statistician – JMP User) Dan Durkin
Scott Quinn (Director) Peter Bartell
Andrew Miller (Data Warehouse Architect – JMP User) Malcolm Stevens
Discussion Topics:
CMC Project:
Scott articulated that the high level initiative is to industrialize a new product (Aircraft engines w/ CMC)

http://www.geaviation.com/press/military/military_20150210.html
The following sites suppling parts, by role are involved in this undertaking.
Fast Work = Cincinnati
Lean Lab = Cincinnati
Lean Lab = Newark
Low Rate* = Newark (also back up to current high rate plant for production)
High Rate = Ashville
High Rate = Huntsville (Two new plants at cost of $200M each)
*Rate refers to output volume
Wants to deliver a GE concept of the “Brilliant Factory” Quality based and data driven.
Scott gets support from the GRC in Schenectady (Owner for CMC’s is Tom McNulty)
Sanjay Correa VP of GE Aviation CMC Programs https://www.linkedin.com/in/sanjay-correa-16a6ab20
Jonathan Blank – Lead Engineer https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathan-blank-149898b
Scott reports to Mark O’Connell – has three teams
a. Raw Materials
b. Parts
c. Coatings
The delivery of CMC’s also included in a partnership with NGS Advanced Fibers
- (Japan based anticipate 2 x growth in near term
CMC Project Status:
High visibility, budget and growth expectations.
Scott took on this role six months ago and described significant timeline pressure.
In order to meet project timelines and scalability needs he identified the following key elements in the project, and his perception of their current status.
1. Capture date centrally
- established with personnel to support – Andrew
2. Warehouse it centrally
- established with personnel to support – Andrew
3. Deliver reporting and dashboards to a broader audience in as automated fashion as possible.
- In progress, early stages, using Spotfire – Oke supporting
- SPC and Yield Reports using Spotfire
- Analysis – using JMP
4. Create a larger team of individuals with broader and deeper skills with regard to statistical and quality methods to support manufacturing
- Immediate need – “we do not know our x variables”
5. Create a larger team of individuals with broader and deeper skills with regard to statistical and quality methods to support the entire project’s value stream.
- Immediate need – “Oke cannot scale to meet the demand”
JMP is seen as an integral part of the project as a replacement for Minitab to address items 4&5.
Spotfire is the tool of choice for reporting and Visualization
“R” is currently preferred for advanced predictive modelling
- OKE interested integrating R into JMP
JMP currently seen as the analysis tool for “deep dive”
Primary Needs for each individual
Andrew:
Improved statistical analysis with automation.
Example – wants to improve an FAA Traceability Matrix, automating some of the statistical regimens
Oke:
Improve reporting content (JMP input to Spotfire)
Improve predictive capability (JMP PRO)
Example – wants to integrate R into JMP
Scott:
Broaden the capability to apply statistical analysis to the manufacturing process
Example – wants to train a number of engineers in JMP use (product, process, quality etc.) so that where possible this can happen on the shop floor. Looking for consistency across the three manufacturing teams. These are Raw Material / Parts / Coating
Opportunity sized as follows: DE = 25 Users, NC = 10 users, Fast Works = 50 users*
*needs validation. Fast Works is in OH, was described as NC. No value given for AL (TBD)
Scott has worked with Dave Posner, Master Black Belt in Process Excellence in OH https://www.linkedin.com/in/drposner
Would like to see if he can use his expertise and political position to advance the JMP adoption. Dan has relationship with Dave.
Would also like to take advantage of any existing courses in statistics in the training organization where applicable. Dan shared his knowledge of 100 through 300 level courses that exist using JMP that may be applicable. Dan has relationship with Lee Becker and Bob Khan to assist.
This led to an impromptu brainstorm between Scott, Andrew and Oke regarding the content and sequence to the training that they believe is needed. After discussion it was concluded that topic should be revisited after a 1:1 session between Peter and Oke, as OKE is not sufficiently experienced with v.12 and Peter will be able to provide guidance if a data set and problem statement are shared.
Next Steps and Action Items:
1. Peter to arrange guided JMP PRO evaluation on site ASAP
o Completed. Scheduled for December 9/10
2. Dan to share existing NDA with OKE in order to support the scheduled evaluation
o Completed. Await GE Aviation feedback on acceptance
3. Malcolm to deliver 30 day JMP PRO EVAL License.
o In process to deliver prior to December 9th
4. Dan to set up conference call with Dave P. and Scott to evaluate Dave’s ability/desire to support Scott’s initiative
