Do you ever go back to Chart and Overlay for anything you can't do in Graph Builder?<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />After some more discussions on retirement of some older platforms in the future, and hearing about a customer getting pretty cranky at being told to go to Graph Builder when Overlay wasn't working for his case, I'm curious...Do you or customers you work with still go back to older graphing platforms? If so, is it because of the availability of a dialog (added to JMP 12 for GB) or features that Graph Builder lacks?
We are planning to remove Layout from the JMP 13 menu, and are hoping eventually (probably beyond JMP 13) to do the same for Chart, Overlay, and Parallel Plot, after an appropriate mourning period where JSL support would still be available. A GB parallel plot element is well underway for 13.
Any input you might have on why you or customers still go back to pre-GB graphing platforms would be much appreciated.
Re: Do you ever go back to Chart and Overlay for anything you can't do in Graph Builder?I also entered a defect http://sww.sas.com/defects/java/iDefects/WebClient.html?&defectid=S1208010 about the right/left toggle in Overlay's dialog and whether we might want to surface something similar in GB dialog, also commented on difficulty of finding right side Y toggle in left side Y axis context menu.
Sheila, Susan and I also reviewed these items and they are working out action items for explicitly addressing examples for these use cases in the doc. We need to be sure that we are showing customers that they can do these things in GB too, wherever it makes sense!
Re: Do you ever go back to Chart and Overlay for anything you can't do in Graph Builder?donMack@jmp, thanks! I saw this related post Graph Builder: Connect Thru Missing? that mentioned the GB checkbox row order option, does that also help with your point #1? I use the X axis nesting a lot, perhaps we need more examples of that option.
phersh , thanks. I see what you mean about the Overlay Y option making it easy to specify right side Y in the dialog (not true in GB dialog). I've struggled myself recently with the right side Y being something of a second class citizen in GB.
Re: Do you ever go back to Chart and Overlay for anything you can't do in Graph Builder?Hey Shannon,
I still use Overlay plot on occasion. The main reason I still use them is it is very easy to put y-variables on the left and right axis. Some people prefer this way of viewing their data as it is very excel like.

Re: Do you ever go back to Chart and Overlay for anything you can't do in Graph Builder?I think that most of the reluctance is because of familiarity with Chart/Overlay and unfamiliarity with how to produce the same graphs in GB. I think showing people two things: 1)how to create a temporary row order X variable within the column list box and 2) how to nest X-axis variables, would go a long way in weening people off of the older platforms.
