'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarHi all,
I am scheduled to have big presentation in customer's six sigma MBB seminar.
About presentation agenda and contents, I hope your ideas and support.
1. Customer : LG Innotek
-related company of LG Electronics
-big supplier of Apple, Intel etc
2. They hold big six sigma MBB Seminar every year. and they requested presentation to us.
-time : 80 minutes
-attendee : around 100(all of them are six sigma mbb)
3. JMP in LG innotek
-they are using over 200 copies, most of current user are field enginners.
-Most of six sigma MBB don't know JMP well, they are using Minitab.
I am very concerned about presentation agenda and contents now.
I am thinking agenda like below;
-current analysis method trends
-JMP's edge point compared to Minitab etc
-Some proper case
-JMP's contribution points to upgrade six sigma activity
-requirements of good analytical software
I don't know well these agenda are good or not, and don't have proper contents to support these agenda.
Please let me share your ideas for my concern.
Thanks in advance.
*ps : Minitab also present that day just before my presentation.

Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarThanks Martin, Ian, Malcolm, Mike, Alisa and all,
Thank you for sharing your experiance and ideas.
I think that this presentation is good chance and big challence to me.
I also was MBB of LG Electronics, I would share my ideas after deep thinking.
Today morning, one of LG Innotek's MBB suggested like below;
Using the function and features of JMP
-Case of finding CTQ/CTP related with defects
-Case of finding optimal condition
-Case of predicting defect in advance (predictive maintenance)
-Case of non-manufacturing area of manufactruing company
(finace, accouting, HR etc)
Thanks
Ikju
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarGot it, nice way to change mindset
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB Seminarvery interesting point, good to know
didn't know that MTB assistant is not commonly used in training MBBsRe: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB Seminar@martindemel - to your point here - I generally steer into the skid on the Fit Y by X behavior and point out how that capability is helpful. When I'm talking to MBB's it's usually a conversation around "if the practitioner doesn't understand or hasn't considered the structure of their data they can make mistakes." In that context - Like if they wanted to try and do a linear regression with a categorical response - JMP wouldn't give them the ability. Or, vice versa, if they were trying to compare data from different years and wanted to do an ANOVA but had the year set as continuous - JMP wouldn't let them run the ANOVA. This should hopefully trigger a question from the practitioner about why JMP isn't providing the test options they want and get them to think about the question they are asking. I've usually framed it as, "why would you want a separate tool when we've baked the guidance into the software? Just look at the graph, ask questions, and push the red triangles."Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarYes, good point about the MTB Assistant. However as a MBB trainer, I never used it since it gave conflicting info from my training, e.g. sample size=20 vs CLT sample size n=30 for t tests & ANOVA.Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarYes STIPS and all the material like tutorials, webinars, and contact to JMP people for free (through community) is a big benefit. At MInitab you have to pay for each of these things and the free webinars are just two hands full and with the basic basics. Again, just mention our offers and ask (what was the last time you have seen a MT person providing you such offers for free - ... or have seen them at all?)
Regarding "Fit Y by X and JMP does this selection for them" I'd be causious, as MT people like the wizard guiding them through an analysis, and this could also be a point of huge discussions about how much one should be able to decide on their own. This would distract the point we usually want them to understand: Become more effective in your data driven analysis and get faster to better results. Seeing JMP as an efficient toolset as Six Sigma methodology is a set of tools and your brain and business/technical knowledge is a tool. Make the best of all of these tools and take a look at your data from many different angles (than just one) to be more confident when all views tell the same story
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarIn addition to all the things being mentioned, I would show STIPS. STIPS can easily replace the six sigma/statistics portion of a GB & part of a BB course, but not the lean portion, particularly if they are looking for web based training solutions or additional reference material for their belts. I am familiar with MTB through version 17. I would also show how to Redo Analysis since MTB can’t do that easily, dynamic linking, DOE flexibility (MTB can only do the same level for each factor & not different levels like JMP). Emphasize a statistic with every graph-MTB only has one platform that I remember that has stats & a graph together. Another thing is emphasize that you don’t have to know ahead of time which statistical test you want to do, for example you have to know ahead of time that you want to graph a scatter plot or do an ANOVA, show them for statistical novices, you don’t need to know what graph or statistic to use, JMP does it for you in Fit Y by X.Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarLast comment: Not sure how the mentality of LG people is to talk about their problems, guess rather shy to shout out. However if there is a chance to make it interactive asking questions like Malcolm phrased into the room is always a benefit. Even if no-one will answer and you might ask it in a rethoric way, they will think about these questions and usually they will feel the pain and the need for change from the toes to the bottom of their heart.
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarI fully agree with Mike and Malcolm. In my presentation I didn't compare directly with MT, I rather pointed out the strenghts of JMP:
•#1: Dynamic linking (quickly explore your data -explore data visually and statistics are presented at the appropriate time vs. Minitab where the user is forced to look for a specific statistic first).
•#2: Powerful tools (full tool set + unique features –Design of Experiments (DOE), Reliability, Control Charts, Distributions, Modeling…).
•#3: Compelling visuals (graphical discovery + unique features –Graph Builder, Scatterplots, animated Bubbleplots, Pareto Charts …).
•#4: Extensible (customize and extend JMP & integrate with SAS, R, and others –JMP Scripting Language JSL, Application Builder …).
with that
JMP helps in quickly identifying root causes to business problems.
JMP helps in deriving meaningful information from raw data with ease.
The tool is applicable beyond improvement projects in any of the day to day tasks related to data.
JMP coupled with Six Sigma drives a favorable mindset change in the way data is perceived and used to make business decisions.
What did I talk about to such an audience:
I mainly talked about Modeling and the challenge many Six Sigma People see in the future: Handling and making use of more and more data. This is a thread and big challenge for them and there is a huge uncertainty in the Six Sigma community about this. As most of them do not have an understanding how to start with such projects. That's why they come up with more wordings like "Agile Six Sigma" which does nothing else mean than react faster based on data driven decisions. That's nothing MT can help with, especially when there is more data then MT can cope with.
Use the industry you are in:
As you are in a more or less Semiconductor environment, you could use also things close to their requirements. Starting with Process screening, wafer maps and clustering defects/strikes to gain better understanding of the different patterns as well to split the data appropriately. All e.g. in the define phase to be able to set up projects in a relevant matter. And I guess Model driven multivariate control chats will blow them away if you make it simple (showing what a multivariate outlier is, asking if they believe this can happen for them and how they try to uncover those now, up to showing the graphlets in the report providing the most important process parameters creating this outlier).
Talking about ANOVA and their issues compared to tools like decision trees (which MT lacks since years, though I've heard in the newest version there might be something like this - but we do not talk about MT). Then you could move to Design of experiments where you just headline constraints and hard to change factors - as this cannot be done with Minitab. Finally talk about two cases in Modeling: Censored data because of Limit of detection and functional data and/or functional DOE Data (golden curve analysis. This is way more than they could do right now, and many BB would not know at all what this is, but as you have lots of MBBs they should see what they could do and currently can't!
The trick in the presentation to convince them is based on four principles:
* Keep it simple (don't show too much on the how, just the what)
* Show them what they could do if they are ready for a change
* Make them feel JMP can help them in each single phase of the six sigma methodology: Define (all, especially uncover new and undknown hypothesis using dynamic interactive visualization and machine learning techniques), Measure (mainly based on MSA and DOE, DB access, but could be all), Analyze (Modeling and exploratory Data Analysis), Improve (Simulate many scenarios, bootstrap to get better understanding of the true estimates behaviour, ...), Control (all)
* Finally keep it simple
Here is some material I used, the original presentation was in German, so I hope google translate does a useful job here. There is a handwritten slide that shows how with JMP the cultural change in a company can work I founfd useful if managers are in the room too - it is kind of similar with the six sigma belts stigmata just based on data methodology. It aligns also to the why technology projects fail:

The Semiconductor.zip file has some use cases I've mentioned abouve as well customer successes in the semiconductor industry using JMP to create better processes and business values. With that presentation (during a webex) we helped Siltronic to increase their usage from 60 to first 90 and then to 150 and now 200 users previously using Minitab and Excel. This is nothing officially to be mentioned but for you: It worked not to talk about MT itself as the things I showed have spoken for itself.
(I want to refresh the content based on JMP 15 but think as base it is valid enough already)
So, have fun, you'll rock it and then we party at Kick-Off

Best,
Martin
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarYou know, I'd be incredibly excited about an opportunity like this, @IkjuShin. If done with some care, you have a chance to put every Minitab advocate in the room off balance and keep them there for 80 straight minutes. I'll upload a presentation I use for situations like this (granted, not with that many MBB's in one room). It will need a little modernizing, but the bones are there. I'll upload it to this post when I get it packaged up. I'm also hoping that @scwise might chime in - I think he's done something like this before.
The trick I've found is not to mention Minitab at all. You must not come across as attacking Minitab in any way. Most of the people in the room have chosen to make a career in Six Sigma. And, because of that, Minitab is probably the only stats tool they've ever used seriously. Some might get defensive if you start comparing us to Minitab directly and stop listening. That said (while carefully not mentioning Minitab at all), hit on every single thing they are weak in and that we do better. Some of the ones I use are: Interactive visuals, the way that JMP makes it easy to follow a line of inquiry, the breadth of tools and capabilities, or even just the way it keeps everything in a single window. My personal favorite is to run an entire process quality analysis out of the Process Screening Platform - the last time I looked, they don't have anything like it.
I'm surprised @ian_jmp didn't mention the Visual Six Sigma book - it's a gold mine of examples and use-cases for something like this. They need to be reworked with the new tools in JMP 15, but the examples are still sound. You're also going to want to hit on how JMP forces people to look at graphs before doing stats (one of the core principles of DMAIC) using the JMP workflow: Graph the data, study the graph, ask questions about what you see, push the red triangle to get answers. Minitab has a weird little flow chart tool to try and teach about this idea, but we believe in that workflow so much it has been built right into every single part of the software from day one - 30 years ago.
In short - I don't think you've got anything to worry about. This is a great opportunity on so many different levels and has the potential to be a lot of fun! I'll upload my demo later today.
Best,
M

Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarPresenting JMP to Minitab MBBs is a hard challenge. I would try and find some common problems that they can't solve with Minitab and focus more on those, e.g. since they are a supplier to Apple would they be interested in Explore Patterns? Do they have challenges in data import and preparation that we might accelerate with our data import wizards and recode capabilities? Do they have functional data that FDE could help with? Do they have the need to share insights and knowledge through their supply chain which JMP Live might help with? I would try and get a conversation with one or more of the MBBs to explore what they can't do then focus mostly on that. You also mention that JMP is used by 200 or so field engineers. Would one of those field engineers be prepared to show a case study of how they use JMP? If so, I would go with an agenda which is a mix of how field engineers are using JMP plus problems we can help solve that Minitab is unlikely to solve.
Best,
Malcolm
Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarThis is a 'big' topic, and the answer will partly depend on who is in the audiance.
Brady and I recently did some Explorer Guide events in Japan, and I attach one ot the PPTXs we used in case there is something there that you can steal. We assumed we were addressing 'Quality Professionals' in Manufacturing, but did not talk too much about Six Sigma specifically for fear of alienating some. Slides 1 to 12 are intended to show that the world is rapidly changing, and there are positive reasons to embrace this change in a proactive way.
Consideration of DOE was in another PPTX. We have all the materials, and could talk further about what we actually did if that's useful.

Re: 'Why JMP' Presentation in Six Sigma MBB SeminarDone something similar in the past, will upload some material later today but wanted to let you know already
