Event: JMP Customer Call - JMP/JMP Pro for S2eMPaC Training
Date: 09/25/15
Location: Corning, NY
JMP Participants: Dan Durkin, Jian Cao
Customer Participants: Dean Neubauer
Description: JMP/JMP Pro for S2eMPaC Training Customer Review (See detailed notes from Jian below)
Objectives
The purpose of this meeting is to review the slides we put together for Corning’s S2EMPaC, a corporate strategy for data analytics and visualization that Dean is leading. JMP is one of the software tools being considered, and Dean asked us to provide him with information on how JMP/JMP Pro fit in the different phases of S2EMPaC: Structure, Explore, Model, Predictive Analytics and Control.
We sent him our draft responses two weeks ago and then he sent us more detailed requests for us to specify how JMP Pro would be used in S2EMPaC. Today’s call is to review our revised response with him before we make the submission.
Overall he is quite pleased with JMP’s capabilities. We matched his needs and requests with JMP/JMP Pro platforms, features and functionalities. As he said at the conclusion of the meeting, “Only JMP can do all of these.” (He is a big user of Minitab.)
Dean’s Key Comments
1. How to access Corning’s internal custom data bases (e., Pi) for ETL, and automate these tasks? May need to develop JMP scripts.
2. He doesn’t want Decision Tree being listed as an exploring tool in the Explore phase as he is concerned this might intimidate basic users. He wants DS and other data mining as the tool in Predictive Analytics phase for stats savvy users. So we removed it, and labeled tools available in both JMP/JMP Pro, and JMP Pro only separately.
3. He likes the use of Goal Plot in the Explore phase;
4. He likes Jian’s explanation difference between PLS and PLS-DA --one is for continuous responses and the other for categorical responses. We added some verbiage to clarify it.
5. He agrees that basic control charts are useful tools in data exploration but suggests we make the distinction between the use of it for EDA and the use of it as SPC in the Control phase;
6. He helped dispel the confusion a bit about how the MATLAB interface would fit in the Control phase. As he explained, the output from Model and Predictive Analytics phases will serve as the input to the Control for monitoring and reassessment and engineers might need to access MATLAB for modify quality architecture. He says he will get more feedback from his engineers.
Next Step
He will present the info on S2EMPaC and JMP Pro we prepared to his team and provide feedback to us.
Our impression are that he is not familiar with the new features in JMP 12 such as utilities and modeling utilities, and other modeling and predictive analytics tools. So we suggested a What’s New in JMP 12 workshop. He took the idea by suggesting a review of JMP12 in the context of S2EMPaC phases. He will let us know the date for this.
Other
Dan mentioned JMP team in Shanghai have had some contacts with Corning China. Dean told us there is a statistician based in China, but he is not a JMP user. Dean would look into this as we could help users in Corning in Asia get started with JMP. He will be travelling to Taiwan in October.
