The actual image dimensions are not always as important as the image aspect ratio in the Discovery Summit design becuase in most cases images will be scaled proportionally to fit their containers. However, there are minimum sizes that should be used to avoid images needing to be scaled up, which will typically result in a blurry looking image.
Unless noted otherwise, images should be in JPG format. Try to keep the files sizes to under 200kb if possible. The resolution is typically more important than the compression level, so images can be compressed quite a bit in most scenarios. In Photoshop, set the compression/quality to around 40%.
