For Internal Use Only
Prepared for January 2015 Kick-off
Company
- Portrait Software is a subsidiary of Pitney Bowes Software, which is also a subsidiary of Pitney Bowes Inc. They provide software, hardware and services that integrate physical and digital communications channels. In addition to Portrait Uplift, their customer-centric suite of software includes Portrait Dialogue, Portrait Interaction Optimizer, Portrait Explorer, Portrait Miner, Portrait Foundation, and Portrait EDGE 2020. Portrait was the first to market with a commercial implementation of uplift modelling. They also have location intelligence with their acquisition of MapInfo. They have a new CEO for the last two years, a 27-year IBM, who is credited with effecting a lot of good change.
Product
- Designed to help implement a customer-centered marketing approach using Uplift modeling to
- Monitor the change in behavior of a single individual in order to identify customers that are interested in what one has to say.
- Group customers into 4 groups so you can focus on the “persuadable” ones.
- Helps focus one’s marketing strategy on where it will have a direct impact; designed to create a more efficient, relevant, campaign while achieving higher cross sell. They claim it is quick and easy to use; that you can improve campaign results by 30-300% and decreases costs by as much as 40%.
- Product was the winner of the DMA Future Innovator’s Award in 2009.
Target Audience
- Designed for marketing managers and analysts in retail banking, Insurance, Telecommunications, Investment management, Publishing & media, and other product or service industries like Dell, HM, etc. Uplift is usually sold to companies with large volumes of B2C organizations.
Feature Strength and JMP Response
- Automated analysis of uplift modeling methods: Predict which of your customers are “persuadable” before you market by analyzing past campaign performances to determine which individuals were influenced by it and changed their behavior, which helps you focus your marketing strategy on the “persuadable”, the people who are interested in what you have to say. JMP has a similar approach to uplift modeling in JMP Pro plus it has many other statistical analysis and visualization capabilities.
- One mode of using Portrait is from SAS—they indicate the software is “controllable from SAS directly.” JMP is integrated with SAS (which also has a different implementation of uplift modelling available in Enterprise Miner).
- Another mode of using Portrait is through their own interface, which they describe as providing guidance and wizard-like with “4 steps to success.” JMP provides much more than uplift modelling, but the Application Builder can be used to make more of a custom interface.
- Automatically identified campaign “decision points” including maximum profit, minimum treatment cost and maximum incremental response. JMP now has a profit matrix for adding cost information to a predictive model allowing you to convert a prediction model to a decision model, which may be comparable.
- Microsoft Office-optimized output allows for easy sharing with others. JMP has integration with MS Excel and more ways to share via HTML5, Flash, as well as producing vector graphs suitable for embedding in presentation and printing and now with JMP 12, you can generate Powerpoint presentations of JMP output with one click.
Feature Weakness and JMP Response
Opportunities for JMP
- Potential significant IT savings dealing with a single source software vendor, depending on how many Pitney Bowes products they are using along with Portrait Uplift.
- Portrait is Windows only on the client.
Threats for JMP
- The product has been developed for over 10 years. Their focus has traditionally been more on customer/big data, and they are client-server.
Pricing
- Unknown, but they have multiple pricing options including subscription and perpetual license.
- Flexible deployment options (including hosted and on-premise).
Competitive references where we’ve won against them or displaced them.
