Have you tried.. Creating a mean of a means or grand mean using JMP’s tabulate platform?
News Blurb:
Using Tabulate is a powerful way to create interactive summary tables in tabular form. By grouping variables and adding statistics right in the JMP Tabulate platform you can calculate a grand mean of means for by groups and analysis variables.
Narration:
To do this in tabulate is fairly straightforward. We’ll use sample data linked from this video or you can use the SAT sample data in JMP for an effective tabulate exercise.
In our data set we have 2 products that are sold in 50 states, We have 2 groups of geographical regions, regions and states. The values are sales of two products 2 products, hoodies and raincoats.
We would like to show a mean of sales per state, per region and grand means of each.
- Once you have your data in JMP go to Analyze then drop down to Tabulate
- Drag State onto drop zone for rows.
- Right-Click on the variable State and select use as grouping column.
- Drag Region onto the left of State drop zone for rows, go slow doing this, sometimes the drop areas are small.
- Right-Click on the variable Region and select use as grouping column.
- Drag Region onto the top of the table. Right-click and select Use as Grouping column.
- Drag the product Hoodie onto table over the existing numerical values. This will use Hoodie for one set of computations.
- Drag Rain Coats onto table over the existing numerical values. This will use Rain Coats for one set of computations.
- Next we need to modify the statistics. Right-click on sum and change to mean.
- Now we select on the check box to add Aggregate Statistics.
- And we need to clean up the appearance a bit by changing the format of the displayed output.
- To do these just click the Change Format button. This will allow us to change all the displayed output individually or all at the same time. In our case, we want to change the format for all displayed output.
- Click the option to "Use the same decimal format.” Select the “Fixed Dec” radio button to set the displayed output to two decimal places.
- The final step is to modify the label for the aggregate statistic from “All” to “Grand Mean.”
- Right-click on the “All” label and select “Change Item Label” or double-click and edit the name directly.
- Repeat for the other aggregate statistic. You can remove the mean label as well by double-clicking and deleting the label.
- Now click done and the final output should look like this Tabulate view.
- Save your Tabulate work by selecting the option under the red arrow, Select Save Script to Table.
