Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsI'd like to access SAS from JMP as a part of future demos.
I am the newest Newbie to SAS that there is. I've never logged on at all. But I've got customers that are interested in connecting to SAS itself (via JSL) and to SAS databases via JMP. I figure I should know how to do that as well.
I'm looking to get a toe-hold for starters. For databases, I've seen some discussion about accessing a SAS database, presumably available on a server somewhere. Is that where I start?
For JSL communications with SAS, do I need to install SAS on my local PC, or is there a way to access a server installation for that as well?
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsI agree with Chris. Less of a headache then trying to hunt down and fix the problem (if it's even possible). Depending on how you did the install and your network, it could take a long time. I've got Google Fiber and it takes me a few hours.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsWhen In doubt, uninstall SAS and reinstall it. Something broke during the update.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsSo I have SAS installed locally, and it has been running fine. Have a client that wanted some help with SAS, so I checked yesterday and it was still working. Had a Windows update last night, went to talk with the client today, and local copy of SAS isn't working! (Obviously I'm blaming the Windows update.)
When I try to run code from a SAS window, I get the "Connect to SAS server" window (used to bypass this). I select "Connect to SAS on this machine", and after 15 seconds or so I get "Local SAS Connection Error: Server Execution Failed."
Same results, JMP 13.2 or 14EA.
I can find SAS on my machine and run it manually, but JMP can't see it.
How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Jerry
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsAh yes, Network speed. That is why I do not use VPN to download. It is even slower!
Glad you figured it out. That is usually what I do when it does not run smoothly. I start over.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsNevermind Chris. Not sure what was wrong, but I started the entire process over, and it seems to be working now. (Just throttled back because of my home wireless speed.)
Thanks again for the help!
Jerry
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsThank you Chris!! I definitely want to install the local version per your instructions.
After a couple of false starts (no Linux login PW) I managed to get down to Step 8 successfully, but then after entering the Order Number and Key I get this message:

This was a couple of hours ago. No "Software Order E-Mail" has shown up. I'm contacting SAS Tech Support, but thought you might have run into this before and have some suggestions.
Thanks,
Jerry
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsThere seems to be a lot of requests for this lately. I can make the files and scripts available once I've fixed a few issues. The data is very large (~35GB, 105M+ obs, 58 cols) since everything is stored in SAS data sets. I don't remember if you need to connect to a SAS Metadata server or if you can connect locally. I'll try to make it so you can connect locally, since that's the easiest SAS installation.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsThank you Nick! I'll definitely do that. I recently installed a local copy of R, then went through one of the videos on JMP/R integration. Extremely helpful! I'm sure Don's JMP/SAS video will be just as valuable.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsOnce SAS has been installed, you might also want to watch Don's video about JMP integration with SAS.

Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsSteps to set up the connection to SAS Server
1. Select Server Connections from File/SAS in JMP.

2. Click Manage Profiles...

3. Click Add to create a new profile.

4. Fll in the info as shown in the screenshot to the right, and Save. (Passwod is SASpw1)

5. To test the SAS connection make sure the VPN connection is established. Then select the Profile (i.e., SAS Demo) and click Connect.

You will ses this message displayed.
Now you can browse SAS data, export JMP table to SAS, and run SAS programs, etc.
Re: Connecting to SAS -- Need Help with the Very BasicsHey Jerry,
You have two options: Local Install of SAS (best if you do not have a remote network connection to SAS HQ) and remote. I don't use the remote connection but is in the SE Community page of how to setup and password, etc. (Don M. was posting for the connection details).
To Get SAS downloaded local, go here (Make sure you are using VPN): http://installdepot.sas.com/family/sas/940
1. Look for SAS INTERNAL 940 17W25 WX6+ FULL PROD+GRID at the bottom of the page.
2. Click on the "+" next to it to open it
3. Copy the Order Number (first set of alpha-numeric characters after the work Order) and paste it to a text file
4. Copy the Key (found after the word Key) and paste it into a text file
5. Download the download manager found here: https://support.sas.com/downloads/package.htm?pid=2056
6. Exit VPN
7. Run the executable that was downloaded
8. Enter Order Number and Key in the appropriate area
9. Save to a folder called SAS Software Depot (location of your choice)
10. Once it is done, run the setup.exe that is contained within
11. You will want to install a planned install. Analytics Pro should be enough and small enough for the basics.
Hope that helps.
Chris
