“Who are JMP’s competitors? (maybe we have them in narrow areas)—but there is nothing else like it.
Who is as interactive?
Who else does as great a job at DOE?
Who does analysis faster and bigger on the desktop?
Who else does Graph Builder as well?
No one, because JMP is truly unique in the crowded marketplace.” -John Sall
Note: This is a first pass at a SWOT for RStudio products. We need to partner with the sales teams to provide feedback on this SWOT as conversations about JMP Live take place. Thanks in advance for the feedback.
Company
- RStudio develops open source and professional software for the R statistical computing environment. Their products seek to simplify data analysis with R and to provide tools for publishing and sharing. The RStudio open source and commercial Integrated Development Environment is the premier IDE for the R programming language.
- RStudio is part of the R Consortium, which includes the R Foundation, Microsoft, TIBCO, Google, Oracle, HP, and others.
- From their website: “It’s better for everyone if the tools used for research and science are free and open. There are many benefits to free software in science: improved reproducibility, wider sharing of knowledge and techniques, and elimination of cost barriers to create a more level playing field, to name just a few.” Yet, their flagship products RStudio Server Pro, RStudio Connect, and RStudio Package Manager range from about $1,000 to $75,000 per year.
Products
- Shiny is an open source R package that seeks to make it easier to build interactive web applications using R. RStudio Shiny Server Pro adds enterprise-grade scaling, security, and admin features to the open-source edition. Shiny Server Pro allows users to share their shiny applications (only Shiny applications, not other data products) and provides secure user access, the ability to tune performance and monitor resource utilization.
- RStudio Connect also supports content sharing created by R users. RStudio Connect is a publishing platform for work done in R, enabling sharing of Shiny applications, R Markdown reports, dashboards, plots, APIs and more in one place. RStudio Connect runs behind the organization’s firewall. The product supports “push-button publishing” from the RStudio IDE, scheduled execution of reports, and flexible security policies.
- io is the cloud-based option hosted by RStudio.
- Products run on Windows, Mac and Linux.
- Comparison from their web site:

Target Audience
- R-using professional data science teams.
Feature Strength and JMP Response
- Extensive security and authentication options. For the initial release of JMP Live, we adhere to standard web and database security, including HTTPS, encryption, and VPN.
- RStudio Connect provides tags (use of a tags schema in the admin’s dashboard) to organize content and make it easy for users to find content they are interested in. While JMP Live doesn’t have tags, we do allow you to search for text in the published content.
Feature Weaknesses and JMP Response
- To do anything with R Shiny, you must write code. JMP provides easy-to-share interactive reports.
- No data filtering.
- In RStudio Connect, publishers can no longer create groups. “The creation of groups by publishers without consent from an administrator made it harder to ensure limited access to content.” But they have provided a work-around to restore the previous behavior and allow publishers to create groups using the new setting Authorization.PublishersCanOwnGroups. JMP developers designed different groups and member permissions for greater flexibility: open, closed, hidden, personal and auto. Member permissions: to be able to publish or not, to be able to delete content (you can always delete your own) or not, and admin to add members and set permissions
Opportunities for JMP
- JMP integrates with R and there may be ways to share graphical output from JMP of R-based analysis. JMP Live is targeted to existing JMP customers, but many may also use R. If they need to share analysis results, JMP Live provides a nice option to do that.
Threats for JMP
- The initial release of Shiny Server Pro was in February of 2014. Other competitors in this publish/share space have a longer presence in the market than JMP and may be more established in customer sites making it difficult for JMP Live to be considered.
Pricing
- RStudio Shiny Server Pro is priced at $9,995/year for 20 concurrent users.
