Running JMP on Amazon Cloud serverI have a customer requesting a demo of JMP running on a server. Is there anyone here who already has JMP running on Amazon Cloud and can give me access, or let me know how I can set that up myself? Alternatively, are there other ways I can demonstrate JMP running in server mode?
Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud serverHadley,
I apologize in advance for my response here if it comes across as being curt or gruff.
As I have explained to Edgar regarding the Shell deployment using JMP on a server under the presentation license; it is no different then accessing JMP from their local desktop or laptop.
Accessing the server environment (AWS, directly, or remotely) would require a user to authenticate to the server environment prior to gaining access to the JMP client software. Once authenticated if the customer has chosen to deploy JMP as a virtual desktop or directly into the server OS then the access is the same as a standard desktop. They would go to their start menu and click the JMP application icon. By default JMP would launch the starter menu, tip of the day and the home window.
Try launching JMP on your laptop to understand and test out the full server experience for yourself.
It really is not any more complicated then what I have described from an end user experience.
best,
Stan
Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud serverI believe at least some years ago there was a RACE System one could use. And then there is the remote server connection in Windows, but therefore you need to have the Server IP address.
RACE system http://race.na.sas.com/
Massimo has used it in the past, I used it once long time ago and also used the remote server connection to connect to a (I believe virtual) JMP machine in the US (unfortunately also long time ago, so I do not know if this is still working or existent).
Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud server@martindemel, what about these "JMP installs we can access via remote?" How can I get access to these?
Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud server@martindemel - Just checked with my AE, you are correct about the no cost uplift, but if a site already exists, then there will have to be a new PS site set up. This effectively means that they will be paying first-year fees for new PS sites, regardless of their existing desktop footprint.
On the revenue point - We ran into this issue in Q2 where there was a lot of concern about downsizing a desktop site because of a PS. The way it works out (summarizing here) is that unless the site renews at the same level of desktop licenses or does desktop upgrades, then the PS license will be subject to BAU revenue recapture. Again - if there are concerns about this the AE will hear about it and the specifics will be communicated by BizOps.
On your server question - are you talking about VM's?
I think the take-home (at least for me) is that demoing the software isn't really important because it's the same on the server as the desktop and because it's a really messy licensing process the AE should be the one taking point on the discussions.

Just that there are no rumours
The presentation server license comes at same price as standard license. The team may make new annual revenue if a customer wants to switch from standard licensing to presentation server licensing, because this has to be licenced new as e.g. it is for JMP Pro starting with a new license. The license file will be different and checked to match the OS. A standard license will throw an error as of JMP 13 when being installed on an server OS. The named user still is valid and IT has to make sure the users accessing JMP on the server are licensed.
Question: The JMP installs we can access via remote, aren't they installed on a server OS? If so, this would be an easy way to demo JMP on a server (but with potential delay on display delay based on the internet connection quality).
All other things said (Why? Batch? User Number? ...) are necessary to decide they do the right thing buying a PS license.
btw. this posts is related to this topic (Bonnie R. has a customer doing EC2):

In addition not directly related to EC2 or licensing, but if someone wants just to share data or working information in the cloud, Drew has something to share about JMPC:

Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud serverIndeed, @MikeD_Anderson has steered you in the right direction. You need to get some more details about what the customer thinks they want with a "server" install.
Running JMP under a presentation server license isn't something that really needs to be demonstrated, since it looks just like running JMP locally. All a presentation server does is separate the display, keyboard and mouse from the computer doing the work.
@stan_koprowski and I will be happy to talk to you further if you've got some more information about what the customer is looking for.
Re: Running JMP on Amazon Cloud serverHi, Hadley!
I've encountered this question a lot. JMP (in general) can't be run on a server without a special license. This is called a "presentation server" license.
There are a lot of wrinkles in how this plays out with our license terms and legal and it gets really messy really fast. You need to find out why they are wanting to use a server (because our license prohibits batch processing applications, for example), who will be accessing it (is the license for a Citrix-style VM?), etc. If they are existing customers, there may be BAU (i.e. no new revenue) ramifications that your Account team should be looking into as well (will the customer reduce desktop licenses because they are moving users over to using a server?). I think the server is also more expensive than a standard JMP license.
The best thing to do is to get with your AE or Inside and talk to @Jeff_Perkinson. He's got the best knowledge of the issue and what we may have set up for demoing.
Best,
M
