Hi, all! I heard there was a request for successes with Functional Data Explorer. This was a fun one for Brendan and I.
Company: Regeneron R&D
Problem: The Pre-Clinical Manufacturing and Process Development team at Regeneron was using a number of tools to conduct research and manufacturing operations. These tools include JMP (Standard Edition) as well as SIMCA from Umetrics. SIMCA is a product that specializes in multivariate analytics, which Regeneron used to process and analyze Raman Spectra. The Regeneron team wanted to see if they could use JMP Pro to consolidate functionality into a single product.
Solution in JMP Pro: The users were set up with a guided evaluation heavily involving Mike Anderson (Systems Engineer) as well as Brendan Leary (Account Executive). The process for the guided evaluation followed a repeatable sales process which consisted of 5 steps: Defining the Value Proposition, Delivering Product Demonstrations, Scoping the Guided Evaluation, Onsite Workshop Sessions and Conducting a Post Evaluation Study.
The evaluation was conducted using JMP Pro 14.1 which was missing some of the useful enhancements added by development in the 14.2 release. In order to achieve the technical success criteria, we leveraged existing features in JMP Pro; in particular the capabilities of FDE, and the SE’s background in metrology and spectroscopy. The customer was quickly able to see the value of JMP Pro and FDE for their R&D work. The FDE capabilities are being used to replace SIMCA for evaluating active regions in Raman spectra and correlating those spectra back to DOE process parameters and other responses. This workflow, collaboratively developed with the customer, leveraged these capabilities of JMP Pro:
- Capturing data and clean up
- Generating of transformed data columns
- Preprocessing the data using Functional Data Explorer
- Modeling and cross validation of the experimental data set using Generalized Regression.
One of the principal challanges with FDE is helping potential users understand what functional data is and how we use it. To help with this an analogy was used: Imagine that it is your friend's birthday. You want to sing "The Happy Birthday Song" to your friend.
Deal: 10 JMP Pro NAL (~$59,000)
