Recording data analysis stepsI recently had a customer come to us with this request:
- "Is there a way to create a file/ journal/project from JMP which includes the dataset used, the script/processing applied and the result all in a time-stamped file, preferably a file/journal/project which cannot be altered?
- The reason why we ask this, is that we find it a recurrent challenge to retrieve source data and applied processing when we have to repeat a specific analysis
- If there is such a solution in JMP, could you send us such an example file or a “how to”?
Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Recording data analysis stepsHi again,
I explored the Save Session Script feature a little more and walked through an example with the customer, and it was actually very close to what they are looking for. They especially liked that it points to the original file location. They have to discipline themselves to save the table before they save the session script in order to capture changes to the table itself. This would be easy to implement in an add-in or JMP Starter-type series of buttons, so they're happy and confident knowing the complete functionality isn't far off. Thanks again for alerting me to that feature.
Re: Recording data analysis stepsHi Malcolm,
I didn't know about that! I don't think it does exactly what they're asking, but it looks like it's as close as we're going to get. I'll let them know about that feature, but I'll tell them that if they'd like something more they'll have to develop it themselves.
Re: Recording data analysis stepsHi Hadley,
Would the session script be of help in this case? At the end of an analysis session go to File>Save Session Script.
Best,
Malcolm
Re: Recording data analysis stepsHi Martin,
Thanks for the reply. I believe they are referred not to automation as such but rather how to record data processing done manually. For example, if I start with a data table, remove outliers using histograms, subset a portion of it, do something else (say, clustering), subset one of the clusters, and then build a model, is there a way to record all of this indelibly so that it can be reviewed and repeated.
Re: Recording data analysis stepsHi Hadley,
could you plese be more specific how this request differs from general automation we often use in JMP or has been done by Intel, Schott and others?
It is not clear to me where the challenge is (Source Scripts can be generalized and with a prompt feeded with any file path, Analysis can be saved as script to typical places in JMP, Reports can be automated and updated. Combining all together will have a complete anaylsis in one step).
Thanks,
Martin
Re: Recording data analysis stepshi Hadley, is it possible to record all the steps of producing data summary when using 'Analyze -> Tabulate'?
