JMP Tabulate allows you to create presentation tables similar to Excel's pivot tables, except these tables are more interactive to allow for some powerful data exploration. Let me show you how. With the Car Physical Data sample table open, available in the sample data directory, I'll drop down the Analyze menu list and select Tabulate.
We'll first see our columns of data on the left and a blank table with zones ready for us to drag our data into.
Here I'll take a categorical column, Country, and drag it to the drop zone for rows.
JMP will show us the number of observations in each of these different countries.
I'll drag Horsepower into the drop zone for columns, and Tabulate will show us a summary statistic associated with each of these levels of Country—the sum.
To change this statistic, we can right-click and select a new one, or if we want several statistics, we can choose them on the left and drag them on top here. JMP will show us all of the summary statistics for each of the different countries.
Click the Done button, and JMP will close the Tabulate control panel, or if we would like these values in a new data table, under the red triangle we can select Make Into Data Table.
There's one more thing I want to point out. You can format your data right inside Tabulate. For example, let's say I want to change how many decimals are visible for Gas Tank Size. I'll drag Gas Tank Size to the Resulting Cells zone, and Country to the left zone for rows. Near the bottom of the Tabulate window, I can click the Change Format button then select "Use the same Decimal Format." I'll enter 0 to eliminate decimals. Select Format to preview the change, and then click OK.
