I received a question from a (JMP Pro) customer who is running an electroplating experiment. He has a designed experiment where he has varied several inputs with the goal of building a model to achieve a target outcome.
He is struggling to build a good predictive model. He says that when he uses the model to predict new runs, it does not do well.
The model seems to change with respect to complexity (# of terms) very easily with the removal of a couple points.
This sounds like a problem that could benefit from a one-on-one consultation with his data and his model but the very specific thing he asked was (I am paraphrasing a bit from our conversion): "Recognizing that cross-validation methods are "doing this" already…is there an automated way to generate a model for each of the possible subsets of the experimental runs. I want to compare the # of terms (and which terms) for each of the models."
Questions that popped up in my mind were:
- Are you overfitting the model?
- Is your measurement system good? (He thinks it is)
- Are you able to control the inputs precisely [enough]?
What are additional questions should I be asking? How can I be helpful to this customer?
Thank you in advance!
