Improvements to the Treemap element in Graph Builder were included in JMP 13. There is now support for n-levels, label and font improvements for creating easy-to-read, complex treemaps. So if you've never created a Treemap or you’re a visualization expert, let’s explore a few of these new features using Graph Builder.

Video Script
There’s a Treemap element right inside of Graph Builder. Treemaps show the levels or values of a variable as rectangles within a rectangular display. he rectangles are sized to represent the values of the summary statistic without leaving unused space in the overall rectangular layout.
Using some sample data, let’s compare the population of various states by region and color by Ozone.
- Select Help > Sample Data Library and open Cities sample data.
- Select Graph > Graph Builder.
- Select Population (POP) and drag it to the Y zone.
- Select Region and drag to the X zone.
- Click the Treemap element .
- Select State and drag it right above the X zone to nest it into Regions. If you drag it over you will replace it (select Undo if you need to).
- In the Element properties under Layout select Squarify. Squarify arranges the rectangles according to the values of the summary statistic, sorted in descending order. This places the largest rectangles in the top left corner of the plot and the smallest in the bottom right corner.
- In the Element properties under Group Labels select Above. This will nicely group and visualize all of our Srates within regions. Region is a super category here,
- Select Ozone and drag it to Color.
- Check the box next to Size Value and Color Value. De-select them if you don’t find them helpful.
The Summary Statistic is set to Sum by default. This means that the rectangles are sized according to the sum of the population values in the cities within each state and region. According to this criterion, the most populated states within each region have the largest rectangles.
As we select each State, I would prefer to have a different highlighted selection treatment so I’m going to change that to outline. Under preferences go to and select Graphs, then Fill Selection Mode, then choose Selected Outline vs. Selected Pattern.
Select Apply and OK to close the preferences window. Make sure to select Apply.
Now back in Graph Builder, click Done.
I’ll save this visualization to my Data Table as a Script.
Now I can explore and select regions and states with linked selections in my data table.
Hope this helps and enjoy using Treemaps in Graph Builder.
