SE Monthly 20 AUG 2018 Monthly SE Meeting:: JMP vs. Minitab AND "JMP Live" product overviewHi Folks,
Thank you for attending the Monthly SE meeting of 20 AUG 2018.
The agenda was:
JMP vs. Minitab. Which one is more cost effective? By Kevin Potcner
Kevin provided a brief overview of some of the key differences between JMP and Minitab that will help SEs address potential customers' belief that Minitab is the better choice for them because it's cheaper.
AND
Overview of JMP Live/Public :: By Stephanie Mencia, Julian Parris and Dan Valente
Stephanie Mencia et al, gave a brief overview of JMP Live/Public, it’s unveiling at Discovery and how we would like the SE’s to help out with the unveiling. Julian went over instructions on how to register for JMP Public and the process of actually publishing findings/visualizations via JMP to JMP Public.

Chuck,
Notes: JMP SE August Meeting - Kevin Potcner - Minitab vs. JMP Talk - 08/20/18
Kevin Potcner:
- Worked for and had been using Minitab for over 18 years
- Now a new Academic Ambassador for JMP
- Passionate about JMP
- Agenda:
- Minitab vs. JMP Comparison
- Minitab Angle: Why they thought they made sense.
- JMP Angle: Why JMP actually makes more sense.
- Which solution is more expensive?
- Many would say it is JMP, but actually not so
- Actually, JMP is more powerful AND more cost effective
- Minitab Approach
- Minitab would not ask JMP users to switch everyone to Minitab at once
- Focused on a portion of the audience where Minitab made sense (low end - just good enough)
- Analogy: JMP is like a BMW and VW is like a Minitab
- Great (JMP) vs. Good Enough (Minitab)
- Isn’t it better to have a solution that you can grow into… One that is a catalyst for developing you people into more effective data analysis
- What problems are not being solved because you’re only using the “Good Enough” solution
- Six Sigma & Quality Focus
- Minitab as standard tool used in Six Sigma
- But are all the problems the company faces ones that fit into the Six Sigma methodology?
- What is the benefit of having access to statistical tools beyond those used in Six Sigma?
- Understanding Relationships in Data (Big Difference)
- Minitab really only has ONE statistical methodology for this (regression)
- JMP has MANY
- What is the value of being able to understand complex relationships in your processes more quickly
- Design & Analysis of Experiments (Big Difference)
- What is the cost associated with running experiments?
- JMP’S DOE platform allows for more sophisticated and efficient experimentation
- What is the value of being able to solve a problem with half the number of experiments?
- Cost Comparison - Licensing?
- Just the licensing - Minitab is different (especially with larger volume of infrequent users) … so have to get out of this discussion
- Why are your Engineers and Scientists only analyzing data infrequently?
- What other tools are being used to fill the gap in what Minitab can’t help with?
- Minitab Assistant Tool:
- Only good for very basic analysis (one sample t test, etc.). Or the first couple times one is doing an analysis
- Not good for true data exploration and dynamic data analyses required in real world problems (more Stat 101)
- Data Connectivity:
- Real world scenario better with JMP (Minitab is very stand alone to bring in simple data sets)
- Minitab falls tremendously short on this, with no real solution possible anytime soon
- What is the cost of purchasing and developing other tools needed to fill Minitab’s data connectivity gap?
- JMP Resources:
- JMP: Getting Started, Mastering JMP, New User Welcome Kit, Community Home, Blogs, File Exchange, JMP Discussions, JMP Learning Library, Books and JMP, On-Demand Webinars, You Tube Videos, Explorers, Analytics Speaking, Technically Speaking, SKP, Discovery Summit (-> 1,000 of Hours of Content)
- Minitab: Only Nine Videos (< 40 Minutes of Time) - Very Basics, not being currently developed, 24 Blog Posts (many re-cycled), Only 14 Webinars
- Minitab: 3200-2500 per day on-site training
- JMP Support
- JMP has highly technical resources that can help solve the problem that are done for free (part of the sales culture)
- Minitab: Has a Sales Team with just a handful of Statisticians (very small) that they send out for a fee (only a few that even worked outside of Minitab)
- When is last time that they have met a Minitab person on-site? Most likely never (9 times out of 10), unless they bought training
- Consulting group charged them per hour, no matter the customer size (every hour of time spent)
- If wanted on-site, had to pay for travel
- JMP Tech Support
- Minitab Tech Support would not work on customer problems - they tried to sell Consulting
- JMP vs. Minitab Resources & Support
- What is the value of having access to JMP’s level of FREE Resources & Support?
- What is the cost (time, money, effort) of using a solution that does not have that level of Resources & Support?
- The People
- Minitab doesn’t have the technical depth of our People at JMP
- Minitab Sales person was not supposed to work with Technical people
- We should have tremendous confidence
- Back to the Cost Comparison:
- Which solution is more expensive?
- Just the License vs. the Full Solution? (shift discussion into the broader solution)
Q&A
- Will the key points of your analysis go into the Minitab SWOT - Yes
- We do have an example where Minitab DOE said run 432 experiments vs. JMP said run 180
- What is Minitab’s one way to see relationship - Linear only
- Minitab bought SALFORD Systems to help here - but have to buy, very expensive, and doesn’t integrate with Minitab
- Most of Minitab selling what type of licenses (especially the five seat/node licenses)
- Majority for five-seat node
- Still sell some shrink-wrap
- Minitab growth because of outside Six Sigma Training model?
- Late 90’s the growth was take orders as companies were getting six sigma consultants
- Never developed a strategic selling process because trainers doing it for them
- Downside…they (Minitab) think it was them, when it was really their consulting base
- Started to severe relationships (no more free Minitab software) to save money
- Currently Minitab being reorganized again
