1st day with JMP!
i have X, Y, Z data. the X and Y are geographical grid data, like a football field. The Z data are various sizes of rocks.
I want to make a scatter plot to visualize the location of the rocks. BUT, i want to be able to group the rocks into custom size ranges (say; small, medium, and large) that i define. On the graph, i would like to select a custom color that represents my custome size range (small = blue, medium = green, large = red).
Then i would like the ability to turn off or on the display of my custom sizes: for example, show the X, Y location of all the big rocks only. Or show the X, Y location of the small and medium (but not the big)
This is probably so simeple, that its not obvious.
Thanks!
Chris,
Thank you for such a quick and detailed reply.
This worked perfectly!
Hi @mwalsh,
I would try Graph Builder for this (https://www.jmp.com/support/help/14/essential-graphing.shtml).
Graph Menu and then Graph Builder.
- Drag X into X Axis
- Drag Y in Y Axis
- You can also put Z into Size seciton and the points will be sized based on rock size
To get the coloring you want, you might try making a new column (https://www.jmp.com/support/help/14/add-columns.shtml) called Size Group and create a formula in that column (https://www.jmp.com/support/help/14/formula-editor.shtml) that looks something like this:
If(
:Z <= 15, "Small",
15 < :Z <= 30, "Medium",
"Large"
)
Then you can use that for the color section of Graph Builder and also use it for the local data filter (https://www.jmp.com/support/help/14/local-data-filter.shtml).
I have attached a JMP data table called Rocks.jmp for an example. Click on the green triangle next to the item called Y vs. X in the upper left part of the screen to run the saved script that gives you an example of what I think you want.
