In the DOE teaching space, paper helicopters have become a go-to test product for DOE explanations.
So honoring that tradition, let’s discover our optimal paper helicopter design which results in the longest flight time.
A data table is not required to launch the DOE platform.
At this point we don’t have tested data documented yet.
The DOE platform will create our data table after you enter in the specifications.
Let me demo this now in JMP.
We’re going to use the Custom Designer option from the DOE menu.
If DOE is not appearing in your top menu, go under your preferences to see what menus you're launching at start-up, and adjust accordingly.
From the top DOE menu you’ll see multiple options, let’s select Custom Designer.
Our first DOE dialog menu appears, where we’ll enter in some critical values.
Right before this stage isa when you gathered with your colleagues and brainstormed about what best case parameters or materials that could potentially create an optimal response.
We’ll now enter those preliminary values in the DOE dialog window.
As mentioned before Response is an optimal result or a metric we care about.
In this case, it’s Time.
So I’ll enter Time and set to Maximize.
We’re not going to adjust the Lower, Upper Limits and Importance.
If you make a mistake, simply double click to edit or select Remove and start over.
For the Factors, we need to enter the high and low values of each dimension of the design or if it’s categorical what are the options or Levels.
A basic helicopter design has: a body, 2 wings, some cuts, some folds and a paper clip.
We’ll enter the Factor information.
Pause the video if your working along.
I’m going to time lapse the video so we can move on to another part of the DOE dialog.
We’re not going to use Define Factor Constraints this time around nor Interactions, we’ll cover that in a more advanced follow-up video.
Select Continue
For the amount of Runs, JMP has suggested a minimal and default Run amount required to accomplish the Design.
I'll stick with the default amount of runs.
Before we select Make Design, under the red triangle select Save Script to Script Window, then save that script window to a project folder.
Now select Make Design, depending on the amount of Runs JMP will Compute the Design.
Here we can view our design in the DOE Dialog Window, now we can select Make Table.
This data table is where will get our specs to build our prototypes from, so also save this table in your project folder.
Following these specs we’re now going to build the designs.
We’ll write down each Run number to maintain the order and record them correctly in the data table.
Now we’re off to our testing site. This is the collection step performed outside of JMP.
Now that testing is complete, let's head back to JMP and enter the results.
I'll save this to the data table now.
DOE has a pre-built the Fit Model that will compute these results, I'll run that by selecting the green triangle.
Now from this Fit Model we can select Run.
And we now have our report.
At top of the report there’s an Effect Summary which lists our factors in order of significance to the response.
We can eliminate factors that have little or no significance, or low P values towards our response.
Now let’s look at the Prediction Profiler.
Initially dragging and changing the Time value we can observe that we need to increase the wing width to increase flight times.
Now I’ll select the Prediction Profiler’s red triangle arrow and from Optimization and Desirability select Maximize Desirability.
Now with Flight time max-ed you can see the specs of your optimal helicopter design for this experiment.
Study the report for yourself linked below in JMP and then experiment building your own optimal design.
Maybe you could add a different type of paper as a factor.
Which variable has the greatest significance on flight time in your experiment?
Next we’ll look at an experiment with Interaction Effects.

ON Screen - show a 8 1/2 x 11” piece of blue paper or orange card stock with 1/4” grid to draw on. A PDF of the blank grid and an example helicopter layout is linked below for you to print and work from.
ON Screen - I’ll add the factor

2. Wing Width as Continuous with 2 Levels and set values between of 2 to 3
3. Set Body Length as Continuous with 2 Levels and set values of 3.5 to 4.5
4. Body Width Factor as Continuous with 2 Levels and set values between of 1.5 and 2
5. Factor Paper Clip Amount as Categorical with 2 Levels and set values to 0 and 1
