3rd Party Events:
4-6 June: ENBIS Spring Meeting (Florence, Italy)
Volker and Phil will be presenting and be present with a booth.
Title: Complex design requirements in the food industry – cases and implementations using JMP®.
Authors: Bart De Ketelaere, Wannes Akkermans, Volker Kraft, Peter Goos
Presents on: June 5th, between 14:15 and 15:00
Abstract: New product development in the food industry often is a highly complex setting that might involve batch-to-batch variation, in addition to mixture variables, process variables and observable but uncontrollable factors. Designing experiments with such a complexity requires a tailored and flexible approach that is offered by so-called optimal designs. During this joint presentation, we will show typical examples from the food industry to set the scene. Next, we will show the possibilities offered by JMP® to produce such optimal designs. Finally, we will elaborate on a practical case from a food company that wishes to optimize a new product. The envisaged experiment involves a constrained mixture of 7 components in addition to 6 covariates measuring properties of the batches used. After presenting a plausible model for this case, we will create an optimal design using the unique features of JMP® and analyse results obtained from it.
Title: Definitive Augmentation of Definitive Screening Designs
Authors: Phil Kay
Presents on: June 5th, between 15:00 and 15:25
Abstract: Definitive screening designs (DSDs) uniquely address the key needs of many experimenters. How else can we explain the rapid and enthusiastic adoption of DSDs since their discovery was published in 2011? For many experimenters, 13- or 17-run DSDs for five to seven factors are go-to designs when screening for the few driving factors. Along with design-based model selection, you potentially have a simple, efficient and effective experimental workflow to find the important main effects, interactions and curvilinear behaviors of these factors. If only three of the factors are active, you can fit the full second-order RSM model and achieve screening and optimization in one step. But what if more than three factors are active? When ambiguity occurs is there a simple next step? Or does the complexity of this situation become a barrier to adoption of DSDs? In this presentation, you will see simple ways to augment these DSDs, ensuring that the structure and properties can be preserved to maintain the benefits of DSDs. Consequently, more people in more situations can benefit from the workflow of sequential DOE and DSDs.

June 7: Get new process optimisation right the first time with DOE - NEW
This case study will examine the challenges faced by a company wanting to bring to market a new product that was proving difficult to scale to production volumes. The company had a large number of inputs that might affect yield, production rate and by-products and therefore could not see a way forward to commercialisation. We will show how they were able to define an efficient experimentation plan that delivered the insight needed to successfully scale-up to production capacity. The findings were at odds with simple kinetic theory which also led to a better understanding of the reaction mechanism. This finding also resulted in a change to the screening strategy for product discovery. Not only did the project help commercialise a new product faster, it also improved the discovery rate of future products, thereby accelerating innovation.
June 12 : Going beyond anecdotal solutions: Utilising data to find lasting solutions to quality and yield crises - NEW
This case study will examine the challenges faced by a company which had issues with a production line every three or four months. The process cycled between good and bad quality, but operators were unable to identify the root cause of the fluctuations. During a crisis, many solutions were offered, but none worked, and the problem was eventually fixed by purging and scrapping the material in the production plant and restarting. This overhaul resulted in scheduling and supply problems. We will show how the company was able to then take existing process data to uncover what was actually going on. With this new insight, engineers gained the know-how needed to control processes to consistently produce good quality product, eliminating many scrapped batches per year and avoiding reputational damage with customers.
June 21: Predictive Modeling for Smarter Business Decision Making (moved from June 7)
Finding workable solutions - whether in research, development, or manufacturing - from prior data is sometimes difficult due to the complex, noisy, relationships between many variables that are difficult or impossible to spot ‘by eye’. This complimentary online seminar shows how to solve complex technical problems correctly first time, and in less time, by extracting powerful insights from prior data using proven and simple to use statistical modeling methods.
You will learn how to:
- Find relationships from prior data consisting of many noisy variables.
- Utilise the resulting model to answer your questions.
- Drive improvement opportunities and decisions from statistical models.
